Car Barn offers a striking venue for events of any size
Tara Plumlee had just opened her third catering company in Chattanooga when she realized the thrill was gone. A creative and ambitious individual, she wanted a new challenge, something that would allow her to do something she’d never done before.
“I’d created ‘A Silverware Affair,’ and it was exciting and new. And then I wanted to produce something closer to my personality, so I launched ‘A Food Attitude.’ By the third go-around, it was wa-wa-waaa,” she says, mimicking the well-known sound effect that plays on TV shows when something falls flat.

New book teaches teens how to deal with OCD
Dr. Timothy Sisemore, a clinical psychologist who specializes in anxiety disorders in adolescents, says he wishes he had less of what he treats in others.
“We all have some anxiety. I joke with my doctor about my white coat hypertension. I walk into a medical office and my blood pressure jumps 20 points.”

What was happening in Chattanooga in 1960
Saturday, September 3
S.R. Finley, general superintendent of the Electrical Power Board of Chattanooga, has been designated as general manager of the board’s activities, chairman Roy McKenzie announced, following a meeting of the board Friday.

Lavine installed as president of the National Criminal Defense Bar
Houston attorney Jim E. Lavine was sworn in as President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the association’s 52nd Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ont., on Aug. 14.
A former prosecutor in Chicago, Ill., and Houston, Tex., Lavine is a criminal defense lawyer with extensive trial and appellate level experience in federal and state courts.

State reaches agreement with companies providing legal services without a license
Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper and Division of Consumer Affairs Director Mary Clement announced on Aug. 26 that a man and his companies alleged to have provided legal services without a license to members of the Hispanic immigrant community have agreed to stop the alleged unlawful conduct.

A windfall is the best kind of reward
I had some free time this week; I’ll tell you why in a moment. I used the time and the quiet of the Levison Towers library to catch up on my reading. No one uses the library anymore. The young lawyers do their research on computers and smart phones. The old lawyers call the young lawyers or practice from memory. Since the law is slow to change, it is easier than one would think to know the law once you know the law. Still, calls to the young lawyers are frequent.

Read all about it ...
Why does the fattest bug hit the middle of the windshield??
?It was one of those late summer nights when the humidity was finally taking a turn to the better and a full Grain moon had risen just over our Tennessee hills as I pulled from the local service station to head home.
During my stop at the station’s gas pump for E85 fuel, and as it chugged slowly, pumping the fuel into my flex fuel car, I had taken the time to clean every inch of my windshield from a long day of driving. The car’s front glass now glistened in the moonlight, and I even felt like the car drove better due to being able to see so clearly across the hood of my car pointed in the direction of home. I usually feel the same way when I get the entire car washed. The vehicle just seems like it operates better clean than it does with grime on it. Of course, heading home also makes things better, and I do like full moons on a summer night – not that I’m one of those who gets strange or anything.

Southern Style
Grand Ole Opry star Jesse McReynolds urges America to unite
?I have heard Jesse Mc-Reynolds called the iron man of bluegrass. He is certainly one of the strongest and most innovative musical talents that I have ever known.
From the first time as a youth that I looked up on the stage of the Lavonia Bluegrass Festival at him and his late brother, Jim, I knew that they were the most polished musical act I had seen.

Are we there yet?
Not your mother’s North Hills
Friday, 7:20 a.m. – North Hills Country Club, aka The Greens at North Hills, aka Sylvan Hills Country Club. But known more commonly last Friday as @$%#$&^% Hills.
Just kidding, it was great to be back at the place where I’d been involved in so many hard-fought battles over the years.

I Swear ...
A-Musing
It fascinates me that musing can be so amusing.
The lyrics of David Wilcox’s song “Top of My Head” used to haunt me – “The top of my head shines through my haircut/ Even when I brush, shape and style” – but now I’m so bald, I hardly ever think of them anymore.

River City Roundabout
Pleasing Palettes
Walking inside the Eastgate Town Center on a weekend is like walking through a ghost town or the set of a film on the apocolypse. I can’t think of a better thing to add to the peacefulness and enhance the draw of “the walker’s mall” than an art gallery.

What’ll they dream up next?
Riddex Plus
At my best friend’s wedding, we all chuckled as her now husband vowed to carry her “princess-style through life” and later scooped her up during the recessional.
When they were first married, they lived in an apartment complex in an older neighborhood that is notorious for cockroaches. It does not matter what your socioeconomic level is or how well you keep your house clean, those little guys are everywhere, and she is deathly afraid of them. Since she is quite petite, her husband had no problem literally carrying her between the car and house so she would not have to be near them.

Dizer encourages students to build early foundations in STEM fields
In the not so distant past, little girls were told they could be anything they wanted to be when they grew up … as long as they became a teacher, a nurse or a secretary. These days, girls have unlimited options to pursue any career field of their choice, and so biology teacher and science department head Linda Dizer of Girls Preparatory School is saying, why not consider a STEM career?

American Lung Association invites participation in Boardwalk Bash
Couched in simple words, the mission of the American Lung Association is anything but easy:
“We will breathe easier when the air in every American community is clean and healthy. We will breathe easier when people are free from the addictive grip of tobacco and the debilitating effects of lung disease. We will breathe easier when the air in our public spaces and workplaces is clear of secondhand smoke. We will breathe easier when children no longer battle airborne poisons or fear an asthma attack.

Realtor working hard while many people are taking it easy
Associate broker Graham Burns has done a lot of things longer than she’s done real estate.
When her husband, Bud, passed away in 2008, they’d spent 46 years together as husband and wife. Their first child is 42, making Burns a mother for that same length of time. She’s even living in the same house on Lookout Mountain in which she grew up.

Texting and driving connected to driving while intoxicated
Most people wouldn’t start their morning commute to work with a few alcoholic drinks before they get behind the wheel, but many across the country are exhibiting signs related to driving under the influence when they decide to text and drive.
Sergeant Chad Sullivan of the special operations division for the Chattanooga Police Department says the clues that officers use to spot a drunk driver, such as weaving in a lane or remaining stopped once a red light has changed, are the same clues they notice in someone who is texting and driving.

Real Estate Facts
You can't go wrong
Want to see homes that are exactly what you can afford? Want the best possible terms for your mortgage? Want to show sellers that you’re serious and capable? Then start with pre-approval, from several lenders.
Forget about “pre-qualification” – that’s just a quick ballpark figure the banks will offer without even checking your credit history. “Pre-approval,” on the other hand, produces a Good Faith Estimate, which spells out the terms of your loan, like interest rate, loan type (fixed rate, adjustable, etc.), and closing costs.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Fresh summer vegetables – there is nothing better! Going to a Farmers’ Market can make you feel so healthy. You know, the chest-slappin’, Tarzan-yellin’ kind of healthy!
For example, go to a grocery store and walk through the aisles of fresh fruits and vegetables. Feels good, looks pleasing. Everything is stacked nice and neat, and has that just washed look from occasional showers of pumped-in water.

The Critic's Corner
Just like certain things go well together, some things should not be mixed. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich tastes great, but who in his right mind would eat pickles and ice cream? Along those same lines, as someone who’s trying to live by what he learned in Sunday school, I see some movies and skip others. For me, watching “Piranha 3D” was like eating pickles and ice cream; the movie and I didn’t agree with each other. However, your experience might differ.
