Chattanooga Bar Association celebrate Law Day 2010
Each year, the Chattanooga Bar Association observes Law Day, a national day of celebration during which Americans are encouraged to reflect on the rule of law and how it contributes to the freedoms they share.
This year’s event took place May 7 at Sheraton Read House. In addition to announcing the new Chattanooga Bar Foundation Fellows, the Paralegal Utilization Award and the Liberty Bell Award, the Bar welcomed the Honorable Sharon Gail Lee, justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, as guest speaker.

Most of the senior members of the Chattanooga Bar Association are able to regale friends and colleagues with hours of entertaining war stories from their decades as attorneys. Many newer lawyers, including 30-year-old Jason Demastus, have little to add to such conversations.

For my entire life, it has been my rule of thumb to avoid introducing friends to potential dates, and to never recommend movies, plays, restaurants, or anything else which ultimately involves subjective taste. After all, there is always a chance, as slight as it may be, that my view will not be shared by the friend, and then what? If he or she is not enamored with my suggestion, they begin to think I have no taste, think less of me and my reputation suffers.

Flood causes farmers to rethink corn or what
As the flood waters slowly retreat around West and Middle Tennessee, farmers are taking another look at what their fields may hold in the way of a fall crop to help pay the bills for this year.
Rural Tennessee is still trying to make sense out of a weekend of unheard of rain totals that happened two weeks ago and hundreds of households in some rural counties still do not have drinkable water to use. For the last several days we have heard the water count go from a 50-year flood event to a 100-year flood event and now it is even being called a 1,000-year flood event. How they know I have no way of telling, but one thing for certain, it is more water than anyone living in these parts has seen for a while.

Free Comic Book Day leaves a super impression on industry and fans
Annually on the first Saturday in May, comic fans across the nation pull on their spandex and leather renditions of costumes of their favorite superheroes. They then make a trip boldly, to the local comic store and for their effort, are rewarded with an assortment of free comic books on this yearly holiday of sorts called Free Comic Book Day.

Grill Daddy
I am the type of person who usually believes that dispersing chores and household duties should not be based on the sex of the person. I can crawl on my hands and knees to pull weeds out of the flowerbeds, use a push mower to trim the lawn, change the oil in my car and kill spiders all day, if I need to. At the same time, I do not mind cleaning the dishes, making the bed or going grocery shopping. (OK, so I hate laundry, but I do it anyway.) I was just raised with the understanding that when there are chores to be done, everybody who is physically capable should pitch in and help.
Bank Building estate sale puts a twist on location and “going green”
The ultimate recycling effort picked up success in the Historic Bank Building estate sale during Mother’s Day weekend. The appraisal group, Those Girls, Inc., consisting of Sunny Wagoner and Mary Joe Richie, teamed up with Darlene Brown, the owner of the historic Chattanooga Bank and Trust Building, and Diane Mizell, a fine arts appraiser for Signal Art, for this mother loded of a sale.
La Feria Hispana to promote awareness of Latin American culture
Of all the ways to experience a new culture, perhaps none are as enjoyable as a festival, especially when music, dance and food are involved. Residents of Chattanooga will have an opportunity to get to know their Latino neighbors during one such celebration when local nonprofit La Paz hosts the sixth annual La Feria Hispana at the Chattanooga Market on June 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New agent finds success in real estate late in life
Crye-Leike Realtor Bill Britt is sitting at his desk ready for whatever the day has for him. He looks sharp, dressed as he is in a white shirt and the blinding aura of the morning sun, which is bursting through the window behind him. The bottom line is when you have friends in a country, you are less apt to support your government going to war with them, Georgia Eastman says. As the president of the Sister Cities Association of Chattanooga, which works to bring understanding and a worldly friendship between Chattanooga and other countries, peace between nations is one of her priorities.

Every time I visit my hairdresser to get my hair trimmed (along with gray covered), she turns her TV to the Food Network Channel. She knows I write about, cook and eat lots of food, and that I have been cooking since I could reach the stove by standing on a chair. Well, maybe that is a little exaggeration, but all the rest of it is true.
The Critic's Corner
When it comes to the movies, there’s nothing sweeter than going in with zero expectations and then finding yourself blown away as you walk out of the theater two hours later. That adrenaline rush is what I felt after seeing “The Losers,” an action picture based on the comic of the same name.
