Bar Association director dances the night away
Lynda Hood says she has watched ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” from the very beginning, and has mused over the thought of what fun it would be to be on stage as one of the dancers.
This daydream will soon be a reality for the executive director of the Chattanooga Bar Association. On June 26, she and five other local celebrity dancers will partner with professional dancers from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio to dance the night away in the Dancing with the Stars Chattanooga event. On hand will also be Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy from the TV show who will show the novices of dance just how ballroom dancing is done.

Red Cross director relishes opportunity to serve
Barbara Alexander, executive director of the Chattanooga Red Cross, is in a position to help a lot of people should disaster strike locally.
Whether it’s a house fire that puts a family of limited means on the street or severe weather that places an entire community at risk, she’s part of an organization that tends to the immediate needs of the victims of tragedies.

Bad news or good news?
U.S. news has been grim over the last few months. First, a tragedy occurred in West Virginia, where a mine explosion killed 29 workers. Then, in other unsettling news, a respected justice told us he was stepping down from the High Court. Just when we had come to grips with that, an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, causing an oil spill which continues to advance. Then, after thinking it couldn’t get worse, NBC announced it was pulling “Law and Order.”

It’s a short commute but an important job
With June being National Dairy Month, and a major celebration within the Volunteer State for a lot of years, this year will be no different. The dairy industry has generated billions of dollars for our state’s economic activity for years and continues to do so, even though the number of dairy farms you see along the roadsides has dwindled over the years. Last year, more than $190 million was put back into Tennessee’s economy by Tennessee’s dairy production.

Are We There Yet?
Just warming up
The weather is 95 and hazy, kind of like John McCain.
– An anonymous Democrat
During these increasingly warmer days I find myself hanging out in the house a lot, watching too much TV, already dreaming of the end of daylight savings time and the beginning of Jack-O-Lanterns, burning wood and a cold north wind; and we’re barely into June.

I Swear...
The better to view and solve the puzzle
Awhile back, David Menz said to me that he was working the I Swear Crossword on an airplane when it occurred to him that it would be nice if the puzzle was positioned on the page so that you could see the whole thing when the paper is folded in half.

River City Roundabout
Keep on rolling
The sold out first home bout of the year for the Chattanooga Roller Girls brought out the seasoned fans of the sport as well as those first-timers to witness the speed and strength of the Roller Girls. Entire families, from children to grandparents, were on hand to cheer the team on as they went head to head against the Columbia Quad Squad clad in red jerseys and, barely there, bikini bottoms.

What'll they dream up next?
Sky Mall catalogue
I once had a goal to visit all 50 states by the time I turned 25 years old, but now that I am past that age and still have the Northeast portion of the country to go, I will just put it on my bucket list. There is something about traveling that I really enjoy. While I have only been outside of the United States a time or two, I really enjoy going to other areas of our country to experience the different cultures, climates and scenery.

Chickamauga Marina providing access to boating pleasure
For more than 50 years, boaters have been accessing Chickamauga Lake, Nickajack Lake and Hales Bar Lake
through a cloistered harbor located at the end of Amnicola Highway. Called Chickamauga Marina, it’s one of the many launching points onto the glistening waterways that dot the landscape of Southeast

Pet Haven services memorialize four-legged family members
When a pet dies, it can be like losing a family member or even a child, says Jennifer Stiner, who co-owns the Pet Haven Cemetery and Crematorium with her mother, Brenda Stiner.
“There is a strong bond between owners and their pets, because with a child, they grow up and move on, but the pet stays a dependent ... you love them like a four-legged child,” Jennifer says.

Realtor turns right place and right time into right career
Tammy Babb is providing an impromptu tour of the James Building on Broad Street, pointing out the cast iron stairs that lead to the second story, the quiet break area near the back of the ground level and the skylight that illuminates the high ceilinged passageway in that part of the structure.

Across town endless options for Father’s Day gifts abound
Although it may be tempting, getting your dad another tie for Father’s Day doesn’t have to be the failsafe. Breaking out of the routine by getting him something unique is simple according to Andre Beattie, owner of Couture Cakes.
Couture Cakes, a division of A Bountiful Harvest, is a local, family owned company that has been in Hixson for 10 years. Although they started out by offering gift baskets, Beattie says they were not satisfied with the generic wholesale items they were buying and decided to make the chocolate themselves. With the shop doing more business than ever, he says they are glad they made the switch to making customized, fresh items with premium ingredients.

Real Estate Facts
Take a guide on your hunt
There are two apparently attractive options for buyers scoping out a deal. One type is the “short sale,” where sellers have made an agreement with their lender to sell the home for less than they still owe on the mortgage. The second type is the REO (bank-owned) home, which has fallen back into the hands of the lender after the sellers defaulted.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Don and I are in the “let’s get healthy” mode. I know some of you are well into your spring workouts, and going great guns, but it has taken us a little longer. We are just now getting there.
So I’ve been reading, he’s been reading – that’s a start, right?

The Critic's Corner
I can only imagine the difficulty of what the writers at DreamWorks Animation faced as they sat down to crank out “Shrek Forever After,” the final installment of the popular series. The original “Shrek” was a classic, full of humor, wit, great characters and a story that poked fun at every Disney cliché. The second film was most of that, only less so, while the third was mind-numbingly dull. Of the three, the first “Shrek” was the only one to tell a story worth revisiting.
