Seminar to explore Judge Edgar’s decision in the Brown case

History contains many turning points – pivotal moments in time when forces gathered together, rose against the establishment and changed the course of things to come.

These moments are worth remembering, partly because it’s important to understand how the past impacts the present, but also to honor those whose actions changed things for the better. This month, the people of Chattanooga will have an opportunity to commemorate the decision 22 years ago by U.S. Federal Judge Robert Allan Edgar that led to the present form of government in the city.

UT College of Medicine continues use of live pigs

Medical students are soon aware of the rigors of their field of study in not only the years it takes to become a licensed physician, but also the intensive study of the way bodies function and malfunction. For students who wish to go into the surgeon specialty of the field, at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga campus there is another task to face within the surgery clerkship: the use of live animals in medical study.

What was happening in Chattanooga in 1961

Sunday, April 16

A public barge dock and distribution terminal facility to involve an ultimate expenditure of over $1,500,000 is being erected on the north side of the Tennessee River between Olgiati Bridge and the Cargill, Inc. property.

Gladiators and gladiolas – springtime for lawyers

When spring hits the Levison Towers, things get a little weird. Here in the Midwest, it is not uncommon to run both furnace and air conditioner on the same day. We get dressed for work like schizophrenics, with sweaters and tweed over short sleeved shirts. Mixing atmospheres on the same day, much like crossing the streams in “Ghost Busters,” is bad.

Read all about it...
The size of the crowd depends on the weather

On Monday April 4, 2011, when the word was first released on the passing of the state’s 46th Governor Ned Ray McWherter, statements were released all across the state from those who knew this man as one of Tennessee’s greatest statesmen.

Southern Style
Tim McCoy, America’s authentic western star

When you think of western films, even 30 plus years after his passing, the legendary John Wayne is who comes to most people’s minds.

Who can ever forget his greater than life presence on the screen no matter what film was rolling through the projector like: “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon,” “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “The Sons of Katy Elder,” “True Grit,” “Rooster Cogburn,” and “The Shootist.”

Case Digests: Tennesse Court of Appeals Syllabus

Jesse R. Miltier v. Bank of America, N.A.

Are we there yet?
The baby year

I began thinking about 1957, the year I was born, and I was trying to find out how the average life expectancy has changed from that year until now. Just so you will know, it is 77 now as compared to 69.5 in 1957.

Of course if you are non-female, as I am, then you need to knock three years off of that number. If I do in fact hit this average number (which I somehow have managed to do in many endeavors to this point), then I am looking at only 27 more years of life on this old earth. As my mother would say – “You better get busy.”

I Swear...
Para-whoozit?

He intended to say, “I’m so glad to see you!” It came out “I’m so sad to see you!”

He was planning to break up with her and had worried for days over this moment.

Thus, he committed a parapraxis, “an action in which one’s conscious intention is not fully carried out, … thought to be generally due to a conflicting unconscious intention.”

River City Roundabout
“A Scorcher”

“What is the victory of a cat on a hot tin roof? Just staying on it, I guess, as long as she can.” These were the lines uttered by movie star legend, Elizabeth Taylor, in her role as Maggie Pollitt in the 1958 film version of Tennessee William’s play, “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof.”

A Day in the Life

I know I’m supposed to be an adult and all, but I’m scared of lighting. The thunder that claps after the light show doesn’t bother me … much. But spring has been hosting “The Thunderstorms” in concert for a few weeks now and I’m not a fan of the show. Of course rain is a principle ingredient to making the garden grow, but I would prefer the rain without her loud friends.

Brainbuster — Make your brain tingle!

The Bookworm
“Nerve: Poise Under Pressure, Serenity Under Stress, and the Brave New Science of Fear and Cool”

Imagine that everybody’s naked.

No, wait, that won’t work. That’s just going to make you feel more self-conscious. And taking deep breaths only makes you lightheaded.

Why in the world did you volunteer to give a report to the CEOs?  Whatever gave you the idea that you could cold-call or do client presentations or organize the company retreat?  What were you thinking?

Nuclear power in Hamilton County remains vital for competitive edge

With the multiple articles and opinions floating around, it’s hard to make sense of how nuclear power affects Hamilton County. Ray Golden, manager of nuclear communications at Tennessee Valley Authority acts as a resource to help ease citizens’ minds about this power source.

Couples therapist says teamwork is the key to a lasting marriage

Captain and Tennille were wrong: love does not keep people together. Rather, the relationships that last are those in which both partners feel like they’re on the same team, says Dr. Carol Kutchins, a couples therapist in Chattanooga.

“A lot of people who love each other are divorced,” she says.

Catanzaro details college’s connections, reaches out

The April meeting of the Chattanooga Women’s Council of Realtors was positively packed with good news, useful tips and a hearty lunch.

Continuing with the FORD networking technique that stands for family, occupation, recreation and dreams, members were asked to focus on trying to expand networking attempts by asking about the occupation of the people they meet, and to focus on recalling this aspect when they meet this person again.

Dinosaurs! At the Zoo begins April 30, plus much more

The mystery and power be-hind prehistoric animals captures the attention of young and old alike. Yet apart from pictures in books and movies, our face-to-face experience with these marvelous creatures has been limited. Now Chattanoogans are going to be able to get up close and personal with infamous prehistoric predators through a new exhibit coming to the Chattanooga Warner Park Zoo.

Real Estate Facts

There are new rules regarding short sales meant to improve the experience for both sellers and buyers, but the legalities and legwork can overwhelm even the most savvy.  Of course, that’s where the real estate agent shines, handling the paperwork and the phone calls, leaving you to focus on your move.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Philadelphia Sushi Shrimp Roll

Last week I was privileged enough to be invited to eat lunch with three of our very dedicated and distinguished Army National Guard service members. Yes, one of them did just happen to be our son, however, it was still a huge honor. The ones I dined with will all be deployed soon, so it was special in many ways.

The Critic's Corner
“Source Code”

Talk about rude awakenings. One minute, Captain Colter Stevens is piloting a military helicopter in Afghanistan, and the next, he’s on a commuter train.

Seated across from him is a beautiful woman, who looks at him and says, “I took your advice.” She clearly knows him, but he has no idea who she is. Confused, he stumbles to a bathroom and looks in a mirror. The face that stares back at him is not his. Moments later, a bomb goes off and all of the passengers die.

Four rules of business expansion

To be a Champion Agent, you must understand the Four Rules of Business Expansion. These rules are universal to all businesses, but especially to service businesses where the competition is high and the opportunities for repeat customers and referrals are higher. Those factors describe the real estate business well.
