The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the Chattanooga Housing Authority $250,000 for emergency and security improvements.
“One of our primary responsibilities to the individuals and families living in our communities is their safety,” says Elizabeth McCright, CHA executive director. “This grant will help provide the tools we need to keep our residents safe.”
HUD’s Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program supports public housing authorities as they address the safety of public housing residents. These grants may be used to install, repair or replace capital needs items including security systems, surveillance cameras, fencing, lighting, alarm systems, window bars, deadbolt locks and doors.
“These funds will go a long way to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” says Felix Vess, CHA police chief.
Vess noted that the funds will provide digital video recorders and cameras in 11 CHA sites. The communities receiving equipment are: College Hills, Cromwell, Dogwood Manor, East Lake, Emma Wheeler, Fairmont, Gateway Towers, Glenwood, Greenwood Apartments, Mary Walker Towers and Woodside. Installation will begin early this month and take about six months to complete.
“We’re honored that the CHA was one of 22 public housing authorities across the country awarded funds from $5 million in grants,” McCright says. “We’re grateful for HUD’s continuing support in helping us keep our residents safe.”
