Habitat opening second Restore

Habitat for Humanity is opening a second ReStore in Ooltewah, a 21,000-square foot store at 9408 Apison Pike scheduled to open April 21.

Habitat’s ReStore operates as a retail store, accepting donations of new and gently used household, furniture, hardware and building items from individuals and businesses in the community. Goods are then sold to the public at a reduced cost, usually 50 to 70 percent of the original price.

“We’re excited about becoming a part of the Ooltewah, Apison and Collegedale communities,” says David Butler, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area.

“All proceeds from the ReStore sales go directly into funding our mission of building homes for deserving families in Hamilton County. We only build homes for individuals and families who are in need and have completed the mandated requirements to become a Habitat homeowner, including fulfilling 350 sweat equity hours and completing homeownership educational classes. These homes are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable, zero interest mortgages.”

Habitat opened its first ReStore in Chattanooga off Main Street in 2004. Last year, it generated more than $500,000 in sales – enough to build seven Habitat homes.

“We hope to double our sales, which will help us to increase the number of homes we are able to build annually through the opening of our second ReStore,” says Glen Golden, ReStore’s district manager.

In preparation for its April opening, Habitat plans to hire 10 employees to staff the store. Officials also need assistance from the community to help stock the ReStore with donations of household items. Some suggested items to donate to the Restore include:

  • Cabinets
  • Working appliances
  • Furniture (indoor and outdoor)
  • Housewares
  • Home décor items
  • Building materials
  • Flooring and new carpet
  • Tools
  • Garden equipment

To schedule a complimentary donation pick up, call the ReStore at (423) 634-1004. To apply to work at the new ReStore, visit www.habichatt.org.
