Tangerinas 10-year anniversary
Tangerinas will hold a ten-year anniversary celebration on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. There will be sangria, snacks, and a chance to win a gift basket. Nicole Griffin and her aunt, Debbie Prater, started their adventure at the Chattanooga Market, and were originally known for transforming old wooden windows into works of art called window tables. In August 2009, they opened Tangerinas in the Northshore art district in Chattanooga. Their creations now include everything from hardware words to anything made from the materials they scavenge. Readers and wRiters Fair
The City of Chattanooga’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will hold the first ever Readers and wRiters Fair to celebrate reading, writing, and local authors and storytellers. The free event will take place on the streets surrounding City Hall on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Writers will be selling copies of their works at booths, and local bookstores will be offering a sample of what’s found at their Chattanooga storefronts. Each hour of the fair will provide an opportunity for participants to hear from local writers and storytellers in the form of poetry, excerpts, and five-minute stories. Between performances, fair-goers will be able to obtain autographs from authors and enjoy local fare from Chattanooga food trucks.
Gallery Hop 2016
The Association for Visual Arts (AVA) will present the tenth annual AVA Gallery Hop on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 2-8 p.m. The Gallery Hop is a free event that celebrates local art galleries and encourages buying art locally. The Gallery Hop will feature galleries and artist studios in and around Downtown Chattanooga. During the event, the public will be able to meet local artists, watch demonstrations, and learn about the artists’ creative processes. Galleries will have special exhibitions on display, and refreshments will be provided at most venues. A map featuring the location of each gallery and studio is available at www.avarts.org.
Pickin’ on Poetry
Southern Lit Alliance, UTC Fine Arts Center, and SoundCorps will host acclaimed poets Rebecca Gayle Howell and Ansel Elkins for Pickin’ on Poetry, a discussion of poetry in American songwriting. The conversation will unfold at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Camp House, located at 149 E. MLK Blvd. The event is the first of UTC’s inSIGHT Series, conversational community events that align thematically with the program for UTC’s Patten Performance Series. Howell is a senior editor of Oxford American and the author of “Render / An Apocalypse.” She has won a Pushcart Prize, as well as other awards and fellowships, and is notable for her translations of poetry volumes. Elkins is the author of the poetry collection “Blue Yodel,” which was selected as a winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and has been featured in Guernica and Oxford American, among other publications. The conversation will be moderated by UTC English professor Joseph Jordan, who has explored poetry aesthetics in his book “Dickens Novels as Verse.” Lookout Mountain writer Jamie Quatro, author of “I Want to Show You More” and contributing editor to Oxford American, will introduce the lineup. Chattanooga Friends Chili Cook-Off
Chattanooga Friends will present its first Chili Cook-Off on Friday, Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Miller Plaza. Teams from local companies, restaurants, and nonprofits will compete to win prizes for the best chili in Chattanooga. Guests will purchase a bottomless bowl for $5, which they can fill with chili from each team. They will then vote on a People’s Choice award. A panel of judges will also choose a team to receive Chattanooga’s Best Chili award. The Chili Cook-will coincide with PARK(ing) Day, an annual worldwide event where artists, designers, and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. Chattanooga Friends is accepting team entries starting at $250, and sponsorship opportunities are available. Proceeds will benefit Siskin Children’s Institute, Northside Neighborhood House, Boys and Girls Club, and Little Miss Mag Early Learning Center.
Run/Walk for Cammy’s Cause
The Mary Cameron Robinson (MCR) Foundation will host its 11th annual fundraiser, A 5K Run/Walk for Cammy’s Cause, on Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Ross’s Landing. The event will honor the memory of Mary Cameron “Cammy” Robinson. After losing Cammy 11 years ago to complications stemming from a 14-year battle with eating disorders, her family and friends host the walk/run every September. This year, the event will feature a 5K run/walk and a one mile run/walk. Creative Discovery Museum fundraiser
Creative Discovery Museum’s annual fundraiser, AmuseUm, will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. Guests will experience a slow-motion mirror, race robotic spheres through an obstacle course, and enjoy food from Lee Towery Catering, dancing on the roof, and music from Sound Force Entertainment. Cast Iron Cookoff
The annual Cast Iron Cookoff will take place at the Chattanooga Market on Sunday, Sept. 18. Five of Chattanooga’s top chefs will create sustainable seafood dishes with ingredients sourced at the Market.
