Saturday, June 25, 1966

Bobby Howard Burns, 18, star Central High School athlete and student leader, died Friday morning at Erlanger Hospital from apparent viral meningitis. Young Burns was a spring graduate of Central, where he earned all-district and all-regional honors on the basketball team. He was a cadet colonel of the Central ROTC.

Sunday, June 26

Twenty-six foreign physicians from as far east as China and as far south as Argentina will assume their duties as residents along with 30 American counterparts Friday at Erlanger Hospital, Dr. William Marsh, director of medical education at the hospital, said.

Monday, June 27

Hubert J. Stagmaier, a member of Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, was one of three Tennesseans to receive the Knight of St. Gregory medal from Pope Paul VI. The papal citations were awarded for good deeds and observance of their faith.

Tuesday, June 28

The City Commission passed on final reading, by a 3-0 vote, an ordinance annexing the area from Moccasin Bend up Mountain Creek Valley to Read’s Lake Road. Mayor Kelley and Commissioners McInturff and Peterson voted for the ordinance, and Commissioners Turner and Bender passed. The ordinance goes into effect July 28, unless there is a court suit in the meantime.

Seven representatives from the Chattanooga Kiwanis Club will attend the 51st annual convention of Kiwanis International in Portland, Ore., July 1-5. Representing the club will be President Louis C. Harris and Mrs. Harris; Dr. William G. West, lieutenant governor of Division 16; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd C. Delaney; and executive secretary Mrs. A.V. Pickler and Mr. Pickler.

Wednesday, June 29

Four officers of the Chattanooga Civitan Club are in Jacksonville, Fla., for the national convention. They are retiring President Arch Trimble, Jr.; incoming President Warren Clark; District Lt. Governor Dr. E.F. Huckaba; and Secretary Edith Werndli. Paul I. Morris of the Hickory Valley club is also attending.

Home-Finders U.S.A., a service to assist homeowners in moving from one city to another, will open a Chattanooga office at 309 Volunteer Building July 1. Mrs. Margaret Matlock of Nashville, regional manager, announced that the service with headquarters in El Paso, Texas, is carrying out a program to become nationwide with an office in every city with a population of 100,000 or more.

Thursday, June 30

Thomas Ashurst Williams, a young Chattanooga attorney, has been appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, and was administered the oath of office Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Leslie R. Darr. U.S. Attorney J.H. Reddy appointed Williams, and he assumed his duties immediately.

Friday, July 1

Mrs. Tillie Smith, employment interviewer for Southern Bell, will retire today after 37 and one-half years of service with the company. Mrs. Smith started with the company in 1926, the same year Southern Bell bought out the old Cumberland Telephone Company.
