Construction crews and technicians are edging closer to wrapping up the $1.2 million upgrades to the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater. Testing on the new IMAX with Laser projection system and state-of-the-art audio array began shortly after the new six-story screen was raised last Friday.

“This complex project has moved along quickly and smoothly,” said Don Walker, the Aquarium’s director of guest services. “We’re looking forward to reopening on the first day of February and offering our guests a much more immersive experience.”

Movie fans will have eight 3D movies from which to choose during the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater Film Festival, which will run Monday, Feb. 1 through Thursday, Feb.  11: “Born to be Wild 3D,” “Deep Sea 3D,” “Galapagos 3D,” “Hubble 3D,” “Humpback Whales 3D,” “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar 3D,” “Space Station 3D,” and “Under the Sea 3D.” Each film has been remastered for the IMAX with Laser format and are among the highest-rated movies shown on Chattanooga’s largest screen.

A new IMAX pass is also available for purchase. The Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Club gives the passholder the opportunity to see an unlimited number of 45-minute films for one full year for $40. “By joining now, guests can see all of the movies we’re offering during the film festival, as well as new titles coming this year, like ‘National Parks Adventure 3D,’ which opens Tuesday, Feb. 12,” said Walker.

Other IMAX Club benefits include entrance to feature-length films for $4, free upgrades on soft drink and popcorn purchases at IMAX concessions, a $2 discount on companion tickets (each additional individual ticket purchased by an IMAX Club passholder), and a 10 percent discount at the IMAX store (excluding IMAX Club passes and gift certificates).
