Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., administrator of the Economic Opportunity Act (the anti-poverty program) and director of the Peace Corps, has accepted an invitation to be the Adult Education Council’s first speaker in the 1966 program “The World Today and Tomorrow,” to be presented Friday, Feb. 11, T.K. Sullivan, AFC president announced.

The newly completed Signal Plaza Shopping Center on Taft Highway, Signal Mountain, will have its grand opening Monday morning with Miss Tennessee Marcia Murry of Paris, Tenn., on hand to cut the ribbon. Larry McGregor, president of Signal Plaza Corp., owner of the new center, will preside at the opening ceremonies.
Monday, Jan. 17
Louis M. Connor, Jr., a native of North Carolina, who has extensive experience in fund raising and public relations, has been named associate director of development at the University of Chattanooga, effective immediately, President LeRoy A. Martin announced.
Combustion Engineering, Inc. presented the University of Chattanooga with a $6,000 donation for the UC-UT resident graduate engineering program. John N. McClain, manager of the manufacturing engineering division of Combustion, presented the check to President LeRoy A. Martin of UC.
Tuesday, Jan. 18
Forrest E. Tugman, president of Skyland International Corp. formerly United Hosiery Mill, Tuesday was elected to the board of directors of the American National Bank and Trust Co.
Mrs. Elizabeth Steel Jones, wife of the late J. Sutton Jones, who was district manager of Southern Telephone Co. here until his death in 1948, died Monday morning in a local hospital after a long illness.
Wednesday, Jan. 19
The Chattanooga Area Safety Council installed a new vice president and 12 new board members at its first monthly meeting of the year. President Carroll Wells introduced the new members. Robert A. Kasey, Jr., plant manager at Chattanooga DuPont, is the new vice president.
The name of Paul Johnson was added to the roster of 19 men who have been recipients of the honor of life membership in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. President Craig Smith made the presentation to Mr. Johnson, who has been a member since 1953 and served as president from 1964-65.
Thursday, Jan. 20
Ben G. Finley, Mueller Co.’s manager of value analysis in Decatur, Ill., has been promoted to manager of industrial engineering at the company’s plant in Chattanooga.
Corn Products Co. will open a new distribution center in Chattanooga Feb. 1 to handle grocery products marketed by the company’s Best Food division in a five-state area. Plans were announced in New York Wednesday by William A. Schroeder, Best Foods executive vice president.

The Hamilton National Bank at the annual meeting of stockholders last Wednesday elected Victor J. Sutton, president of the Bowaters United States Corp., and Dawson B. Harris, Jr., a senior vice president of the Hamilton National, as new directors of the bank.
