Legal Aid of East Tennessee receives national pro bono recognition

Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) has won the second place award for Legal Aid and Pro Bono Programs in the American Bar Association’s 7th Annual National Celebration of Pro Bono competition. The competition seeks to recognize legal aid programs from across the country for their exemplary work during National Pro Bono Month in October.

The award recognizes LAET for “outstanding contributions during the Seventh Annual National Celebration of Pro Bono.” The competition judges programs on the number, quality, diversity, and creativity of pro bono events and programs they offer in October. LAET held a series of events across its 26-county service area, engaging private attorneys in pro bono work, holding community education events, honoring volunteer attorneys in conjunction with the Tennessee Supreme Court, and hosting free civil legal advice clinics for the general public.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee was among other strong legal aid programs in the national competition. Nevada Legal Services took first place, and Legal Services of Oregon was the third place winner. In addition to October pro bono activities, LAET’s year-round Pro Bono Project expands Legal Aid’s ability to serve low-income, elderly, and abused persons by engaging private attorneys to provide no-cost civil legal help to eligible clients throughout East Tennessee.
