A picnic party was held at Rock City on Lookout Mountain Friday evening. Those enjoying the affair were Mary Belle Thomas, Dorothea Lynde, Katherine Betts, Mary Anderson Everett, Margaret Daniels, Mary Thankful Everett, Clifford Betts, Ed Saunders, Ed McMillin, Clarence McCollum, Dr. Gerhard, and Mr. Lewis.
Sunday, Sept. 26
Prof. and Mrs. Sidney G. Gilbreath announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Grace, to Walter Eugene Thornton of Lynchburg, Va. The wedding will take place in December. Miss Gilbreath is a very talented and popular young lady in Chattanooga.
Baylor School entertained with its first dance in the new school located on the Tennessee River. Mr. and Mrs. J. Roy Baylor and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Guerry were the chaperones. About 75 young folks attended the dance.
Monday, Sept. 27
Mrs. Gertrude Weber Robinson, wife of Mr. James B. Robinson of Missionary Ridge, passed away after a long illness. Mrs. Robinson was formerly of Mount Vernon, Ky.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Herron have returned from Walden’s Ridge, and are with Mr. and Mrs. George W. Nixon on Oak Street.
Miss Jenny Brown left Sunday for Washington, D.C. to attend the GAR Encampment.
Tuesday, Sept. 28
Mrs. Nevin Sloan will entertain with a tea in honor of Miss Lavalette Sloan, a bride of next month, and Mrs. Isaac Phillips, a recent bride.
Lt. and Mrs. John Anderson of Monterey, Calif., will sail for the Philippines, where they will be stationed for two years. Miss Margaret Anderson might accompany them.
Wednesday, Sept. 29
The Board of the City Commission voted in favor of spending $40,000 for motor driven fire fighting equipment. The American La France Co. of Elmira, N.Y., was the lowest bidder. This means farewell to the fire horses, as only one pair of horses will be retained. Commissioner T.C. Betterton made the report.
Due to the lack of funds, the building of a nurses’ home at Erlanger Hospital has been abandoned.
Thursday, Sept. 30
There will be a banquet at the Patten Hotel to celebrate the conclusion of the 42nd year of Dr. J.L. Bachman’s ministry in the First Presbyterian Church. Sons of the Confederate Veterans will be the hosts. Over 500 are expected to attend. J. Cal Sterchi is chairman of the event. The committee assisting are C.S. Coffey, Ellsworth Brown, H.L. Fancher, R.H. Hunt, A.T. Whiteside, Shep Shelton, and Dr. B.F. Travis.
Friday, Oct. 1
The new fire fighting apparatus will honor several local officials. The big aerial truck will be named “H. A. McQuade.” One triple hose cart will be named “Jesse M. Littleton.” Another, “Ed Herron,” and another, “H. Clay Evans.” The new hose truck, “H.D. Huffaker.” Harry A. McQuade was chief of the Fire Department in the volunteer days under Mayor Whiteside. The biggest engine is to be motorized, and is named for ex-mayor W.L. Frierson. v
