The Chattanooga History Center has announced that its 10th Annual History Makers Award will honor U. S. Senator Bob Corker. The award recognizes local individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to Chattanooga, the region, the state, or the country.
“As an entrepreneur, businessman, volunteer, and elected official, Senator Corker’s commitment to hard work and service has had a positive and lasting influence on our community,” said Jo Coke, president of the CHC Board of Directors.
The award, represented by an original sculpture by Cessna Decosimo, will be presented at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16, at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
Past honorees include Ruth Holmberg, Rev. Paul McDaniel, and Dalton Roberts; Mr. & Mrs. Jack T. Lupton and the Lyndhurst Foundation; the Howard High School Student Led Sit-Ins of 1960; Fletcher Bright and the Dismembered Tennesseans; the Legacy of the William E. Brock, Sr. Family; Chattanooga Venture and Vision 2000; the Legacy of Mose and Garrison Siskin; the McCallie Family Legacy; and John P. Franklin, Sr.
A graduate of Chattanooga High School and the University of Tennessee, Corker cofounded BenCor Construction Co. at the age of 25. He was instrumental in creating Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, the non-profit housing organization which continues to build homes and revitalize neighborhoods in Chattanooga. He was appointed to serve as Tennessee’s Commissioner of Finance and was elected Mayor of Chattanooga. As a U. S. senator, he worked alongside state and local officials to recruit Volkswagen. Currently, he is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “Chattanooga has been successful because of its outstanding and engaged citizens, so I am honored to be mentioned among many whom I respect so much, and look forward to celebrating our community and the work of the Chattanooga History Center at this event in November,” Corker said.
