Photography coasters

Do It Yourself

April Sherrill

Some years ago, I decided to make photo coasters at Christmas for presents to give to my family. I made everyone coasters with a mix of photos that I knew would create an instant conversation starter. Over the last three years, I noticed everyone is still using all of the coasters and they are holding up amazingly well.

Photo coasters are a great way to incorporate favorite photos without taking up wall space or furniture space. Also, it’s a very inexpensive gift to make, which is an added bonus.

Items needed:

• Four by four ceramic tiles (I purchased mine at Lowes for 19 cents a piece)

• Mod Podge

• Foam brushes (79 cents to $6 for a value pack at Lowes or Hobby Lobby)

• Spray Sealant

• Printed photos to 4 x 4 size

• Sandpaper (optional)

I have had many people tell me they tried to make these and they did not turn out well, so I am not sure what I did differently, but whatever it was worked! So here is the way I did mine.

Working with the printed photos, make sure to trim off any excess edges. Also, make sure the photo is the same size as the ceramic tile.

To help the photo adhere to the tile properly, use sandpaper to lightly scruff up the top layer of the tile. The particular tiles I used were basic, shiny, white tiles. There are tumbled stone tiles for sale that would look great as well, however, I have not tried any for this particular project.

Next, using the foam brush apply a decent layer of Mod Podge to the ceramic tile, while also applying a thin layer to the back of the photo. Place the photo on the tile making sure it is straight, and then apply pressure to attach the photo while working out any air bubbles.

Set the tiles aside after applying the photos and allow 24 hours of drying time. After drying, use sandpaper to lightly ruff up the edges of the photo. I enjoyed the way it transitioned into the color of the tile. After working on the sides of the photo, I cleaned them off with a slight damp cloth and dried immediately with a different one.

Then using your brush and Mod Podge apply two layers over the entire surface of the tile, allowing drying time in between coats. Follow it up with a good coat of the spray sealant.

At this point, I allowed my coasters a couple days to cure before starting to use them. Everyone I made these for still talk about them today, and I have heard many people asking about them or calling them beautiful.

Photo coasters are a great way to add an extra pop to your décor while being subtle and are fun and thoughtful gifts! Feel free to email me if you are stuck while doing this or have any questions.
