The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation this month released its annual “School Crime Report.” The study compiles crime data involving schools, as submitted by the state’s law enforcement agencies to the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System in 2013.
Among the report’s findings:
• Overall, the number of crimes occurring at schools decreased 11.5 percent from 2012 to 2013.
• Simple Assault was the most frequently reported offense at 3,496 (35.9 percent) in 2013.
• The month of April had the highest frequency of school crimes.
• Males were more likely to be offenders and/or arrestees, while females were most often reported as victims of school crimes.
• Marijuana greatly outnumbered all other seized drugs at schools in 2013, accounting for 79.2 percent of documented drug seizures.
“Schools should be among the safest places in our communities,” said TBI Director Mark Gwyn. “We hope this study will help law enforcement, school administrators, and government officials enhance their safety plans to continue the work to address crime issues in our schools.”
