Summer skin saving solutions

HEALTH CORNER

April Sherrill

As the end of May approaches, so does my awareness about my little red head fair skinned child, my 8th anniversary and Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day is known for great celebration into the summer. Usually this is the weekend that you will notice all the beaches, lakes and rivers packed with boaters and swimmers. Along with all that boating, swimming, tubing and sun bathing comes sun burns.

I wish I had taken to heart in my younger years everything my older generations were trying to teach me about the sun. Unfortunately, I was that teenage girl lying in the sun or tanning bed with every chance I had.

I did this until about the age of 21 when I became pregnant with my first child. Right after I had her though, I was right back in the tanning bed and sun. I had the hardest time accepting that I was going to be a fair skinned lady lacking the golden glow that everyone wanted, especially in the summer.

Luckily, sooner rather than later I realized the damage I was doing to my skin. In my mid twenties, I suddenly became okay with my fair skin and okay with minimal sun tan except what I get from being outside.

However, many of us continue to lack the motivation to want to shield our skin from the damaging rays and forces of nature in the warmer months. I continue to lack the motivation to shield my skin. As you know, there are many great and easy ways to take care of your skin so here are my favorite ones that I would not usually think about, and have had to pay the price once or twice.

Always, always remember to cover your lips in a 15 SPF lip balm. If you have ever burnt them, you know how badly it hurts.

Keep your skin moist. It is a great idea to have a spray bottle with water kept in your cooler to mist yourself and your face.  Being overheated puts a bender on an awesome time outside.

Protect your scalp. Your exposed hairline can burn very easily. It is best to use a spray sunscreen to keep your luscious locks from being sunburned. Lotion sunblock will not rub in well at all.

I am sure many of you will appreciate this one as much as I do, so sip some red wine. It helps reduce redness from acute sunburns due to Resveratrol, a natural phenol found in the skin of the grapes. Cheers!

For you ladies out there, if you do not want to mess up your makeup like most women due to needing to reapply your makeup, then use a powder formula to touch up with that contains SPF.

Do not forget about your hands; namely, they are so delicate and they will wrinkle and pigment easy. I never think about my hands.

Love your face with strawberries. Cut a strawberry in half and fork the flesh to get the juice going and wipe it all over your face. It reduces skin and suns spots.

If you have children then make sure you are always caring for their little skin as well. It can be so easy to let them run out the back door to play on a daily basis but try to make sunblock part of your daily routine.

Make sure you exfoliate your skin well to create beautiful skin. I like to make my own body and facial scrubs because it is so cheap. My favorite would be the Brown sugar and lemon juice scrub.  Skin that glows looks much better than skin that is dull and dewy!

Do not forget to reapply your sunscreen. You should be reapplying your sunscreen at least every two hours and even more frequently if you have been in the water or sweating.

Make sure to protect your peepers! If you are not wearing sunglasses then you are asking for major eye problems including macular degeneration, greater risk of cataracts, and skin cancer of the eyelids. I am addicted to my sunglasses so this does not apply to me.

When the warmer months roll around so do the bug bites. Having a huge mosquito bite can be torture but scratching bug bites is a bad idea.  Scratching is just going to create a bigger bite! It causes the bite to become infected and leads to greater itchiness and pain. Instead, try an all-natural treatment like rubbing witch hazel over the bite area. Witch hazel is super cheap and will last forever.

I am probably a little too excited that the weather is warm but am dreading the havoc it can wreak on my skin. I just turned 30 so I have started late, and only started taking care of my skin 10 years ago. My skincare will improve this year and I will continue to love my long summer days playing outside with my family. We have a field next to our house and the lighting bugs are an amazing light show! Cheers to warmer days and warm starry nights!
