What was going on in Chattanooga in 1914?



Saturday, January 17

Number One, the W&A passenger train leaving Chattanooga early this evening, was stopped and passengers robbed of jewels and money by masked bandits at Vinings, Ga., 10 miles this side of Atlanta. They left the train after engaging in a pistol battle, leaving the passengers in a panic.

W.P. Hays, County Court Clerk, was an easy winner of the Fathers and Sons prize at a banquet Friday night at the YMCA for being the father with the most sons present. Hays had five of his nine sons present. W.H. Sears, chairman of the Boys’ Work at the “Y,” was toastmaster for the banquet.

Sunday, January 18

Miss Frances Biese entertained with a matinee party at the Lyric Saturday for Miss Minnie King of Leighton, Ala. Her guests were Misses Emily Reife, Anita George, Katherine Crandall, and Maude Johnson, and Mrs. E.O. Lazenby.

Miss Mary Lynn Carter has returned from Athens, Tenn., where she visited Miss Isabelle Gettys.

The “Electric Cottage,” a completely furnished home, will be on exhibition starting Monday from 1 to 9 p.m. It has complete electric appointments and is well-furnished under the direction of Fred H. Cantrell and J.C. Sterchi. Mr. D.L. Grayson designed the home, which is located at 811 Chamberlain Ave. It can be reached by taking the Oak Street or Missionary Ridge street car. Get off at “Electric Cottage.”

Monday, January 19

Mrs. Edward Graham of Lebanon, Tenn., is the house guest of Mrs. Frank Carden in Highland Park.

Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Willingham and family have gone to Florida for a stay.

Tuesday, January 29

Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Montague of East Terrace entertained with 150 music lovers with an evening of John Sebastian Bach from the period of 1685 to 1750. Mrs. W.H. Pryor, president of the Chattanooga Music Club, was in charge of the program. Dr. Charles A. Garrett presided at the pipe organ. The program was one of exceptional note.

Mr. and Mrs. George Elder of St. Louis, Mo., will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Watkins for a few days en route to Florida and Cuba.

Misses Eleanor and Ada Grace Murphy have gone to New York to join Miss Eleanor Salmon. They will spend the winter there.

Wednesday, January 21

Beginning this morning, the Chattanooga Railway and Light Co. will start the pay-as-you-enter system on the East Lake line. This is already in effect on Oak Street cars and the Lookout Mountain surface line.

Brooke Brantley is home from Georgia Tech for a short visit.

Thursday, January 22

After 360 votes had been cast, the largest number in the history of the Chamber of Commerce, Paul J. Kruesi was unanimously elected president, to succeed Frank E. Mahoney. Kruesi was former vice president.

Miss Elizabeth Read will leave next week for Columbus, Ohio to visit Mrs. Philip Beebe, the former Miss Caroline Frater of Chattanooga.

Miss Mary Exum of Lexington, Ky., will come next week to visit Miss Mamie Bright.

Misses Betty and Katherine Andrews visited Miss Penelope Griffiss in Paris, France, recently.
