Are We There Yet?

There’s a lot to worry about these days, or so it seems, but only if you happen to be one of those people who has the ability to read or hear.

There is healthcare stuff out the wazoo, and every editorial writer out there has filled space with commentary on it for the last month. There is bad Middle East news, and bad economic news, bad texters who are bad drivers, bad extreme weather, bad bullies, etc., etc., etc.

But there's good as well; you just have to look a little harder.

As for me, here's some good and some not so good that has rolled in and out of my life of late:

Good – Having dinner with dear friend Steven Saul last Friday night.

Bad – His wife Debbie was not with him.

Good – The upcoming holidays.

Bad – The upcoming holidays.

Good – The lady dressed like Elvira at Target, two days before Halloween.

Bad – Christmas stuff for sale at Target, two days before Halloween.

Good – Hard hugs from 6th grade nieces, Catherine and Caroline, at The Anthony School on Grandparent’s (or make that Uncle’s) Day.

Bad – Hugs ending.

Good – Golf at The Red Apple Inn last Saturday before the Razorback game against Auburn.

Bad – The game.

Good – Shot an 82 (yes, expectations are lower now)

Bad – Dennis chipping in for a par from the short side of 18 to win my rabbit (the rabbit is worth $5 per player at the end of the round).

Good – Chili dogs, Dennis’ slaw, and Patty’s brownies during the game.

Bad – Thinking I needed a third chili dog and fourth brownie.

Good – Thanks to Bob, a free room at the Inn.

Bad – The wedding party that was staying at the Inn.

Good – Watching “How Green was my Valley,” Saturday night.

Bad – Some wedding party teenage girl knocking on our door at midnight, looking for Blair, or Beverly, or Bunny. (Bunny’s not here man!)

Good – Kathy explaining to Bunny-searching teenage girl that it was a bad idea to wake us up.

Bad – Romo’s 4th quarter interception against the Vikings with 4:35 left. Cowboys down 20-23.

Good – Romo’s 4th quarter completion to Dwayne Harris for the go ahead TD with 42 seconds left. Cowboys win 27-23.

Good – The meatloaf at Rotary.

Bad – Trying to help daughter Alexis find a car to buy.

Good – Seeing my brother’s house renovation project.

Bad – Getting dark at 5:30.

Good – Extra hour to snooze.

Bad – Waking up at 3:00.

Good – It’s really 4:00.

Bad – Kathy getting strep throat.

Worse – Finding out she had it right after I’d kissed her.

Good – First fire in my fireplace.

Bad – Flue not open.

Good – Seeing the beach again in Florida at Blue Mountain.

Bad – Same sight in my rear-view mirror.

Good – Seeing my niece’s shih-tzus, Hi-Ho and Sophie, at Eden Isle.

Bad (for Sophie and Hi-Ho) – Someone thinks they saw wolves at Eden Isle.

Good – Some people can’t tell the difference between a wolf and a coyote.

Bad – Coyotes hunt shih-tzus too.

Good – “Doctor Sleep” by Stephen King. It’s the sequel to “The Shining,” which was the first of many novels that I read by my favorite scary writer.

Bad – Reading it right before I go to sleep.

And from the week:

Good – Merve Dibo of Turkey married the world’s tallest man, 8’3” Sultan Kosen. The 5’9” Dibo said she fell in love with his heart, not his height.

Bad – Texas rodeo clown Casey Wagner found himself under a tree to get out of a storm when he got struck by lightning. He didn’t move and soon got struck again. The good is that he’s OK, but so much for that theory.

Have a good week.
