SETLAW honors leaders in battle against domestic violence

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, SETLAW (Southeast Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women) on Thursday, October 24 during an evening reception at Lindsay Hall recognized community leaders for their contributions to the cause.

County Mayor Jim Coppinger and Judge Christie Sell recognized 19 local leaders in domestic violence awareness.

Before giving each recipient a certificate and a letter of appreciation from Sen. Bob Corker, Coppinger thanked the honorees for making a difference in the local community.

“When we talk about the quality of life in Chattanooga, we’re also talking about what these people do,” he said. “They’re in the trenches; they get up every day and in some way help the victims of this senseless behavior. I want to thank every one of you.”

Corker, who could not be present, expressed his gratitude via the printed word: “Countless women and their families have benefitted from your hard work. You’re part of Tennessee’s rich tradition of volunteerism and service, [and] … you deserve this recognition.”

A number of judges showed their support of the honorees and the victims of domestic violence by attending the event. In a statement to the Hamilton County Herald, Judge Sell spoke about why the general sessions judges feel strongly about the issue:

“Domestic violence cases are numerous and [seen] every day in Hamilton County General Sessions Courts. Not only does the legal process cost taxpayers, it effects education and employment because of the emotional trauma, physical injury, and absence from school and work. It is an epidemic that can be eradicated through education and awareness of both the cycle of violence and the resources available to break the cycle, which we make available to the citizens of Hamilton County through our domestic violence court.”

The occasion was the first in a series Happy Hour events SETLAW is planning on hosting once every other month. It was sponsored by Davis & Hoss. For information about joining SETLAW, contact Sara McManus at  smcmanus@bakerdonelson.com.
