What was going on in Chattanooga in 1913?



Saturday, June 21

General Alfred Beers, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, is the guest of the city today. He spoke to the Sons of the G.A.R., urging them to teach patriotism and to honor the veterans. He also said the “whole North” is coming to Chattanooga in September for the G.A.R. reunion encampment.

Mrs. H.S. Chamberlain complimented her two granddaughters, Misses Winifred Ewing and Charlotte Clifford, with an afternoon dance at her home on East Terrace. Saffer’s Orchestra furnished the music. About 60 young people were invited.

Sunday, June 22

The following young men have returned from their schools and colleges for the summer vacation: Lewis Coleman, Lyle West and James Cash, University of Virginia; Marshall Lancaster, Spring Hill; Jesse Hunt, Georgia Tech; Jesse Evans, Yale; Francis Case, Cornell; Edwin McMillin, V.M.I.; Chauncey Raulston and Clarence McCollum, University of Tennessee; and John Rathmell, Ohio Wesleyan.

Monday, June 23

A surprise wedding was quietly celebrated Saturday when Miss Dorothy Ellis and Charles C. Huntington, Jr., were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. C.C. Ellis on West Sixth Street. The Rev. C.H. Meyer officiated. The young couple will reside in El Paso, Texas.

Misses Annie and Irene Nash will leave this week for New York to spend the summer with Mr. H.S. Nash.

Misses Sammie Cleveland, Mary Belle Wallace, Pearl Haley, Clara Pindell, Louise Mountcastle and Nellie Bell will leave today for Knoxville to attend summer school.

Tuesday, June 24

Miss Ruth Borcherding left Monday for Washington and New York for a visit before sailing for Europe with Dr. and Mrs. August Schmidt and party.

Mrs. C.P. Duncan of Nashville left Sunday after a visit with her daughter, Mrs. T.D. Charlton, on Houston Street.

Cap’t J.F. Shipp, Cap’t A.J. Gahagan, Cap’t C.W. Biese, and Cap’t W.T. Tyer will attend the Great Peace Celebration being held in Gettysburg, Pa.

Wednesday, June 25

Chattanoogans will be interested in the announcement of the engagement of a former Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Dr. Byron Holley, to an old sweetheart he had not seen in 40 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Sanborn-Knapp, a widow and principal of a school in Yonkers, N.Y. The wedding will take place in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Dr. Holley is now rector of St. George’s Episcopal Parish in New Orleans. He is a very handsome man and has never married. He preceded Dr. Loaring Clark as rector of St. Paul’s in Chattanooga.

Wooward Duke of Los Angeles will leave this week for his home after visiting his sister, Mrs. Nathan Bachman, on Walden’s Ridge. Miss Margaret Anderson is now the guest of Mrs. Bachman.

Mrs. T.R. Preston and children and Miss Florence Clift have gone to Colorado for a few weeks.

Thursday, June 26

Mrs. Cora Griffin Jones of Dallas, Texas and Prof. J.E. Bailey of Nashville will arrive to be the guests of Attorney General and Mrs. M.N. Whitaker for the Chambliss-Whitaker wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl White and Miss Elizabeth White were hosts at their home on Lookout Mountain to a supper dance in honor of their guests, Miss Margaret Mitchell of Cincinnati and Misses Osborn and Dickenson of Savannah.

Mrs. James F. Johnston entertained the Girls’ Bridge Club with a spend-the-day party Wednesday at her summer home at Tucker Springs.

Friday, June 27

A beautiful home wedding was solemnized at Oakland, the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Frazier in Dayton, when their daughter Claudia and John E. Gilbreath were married before a gathering of 150 on the lawn under massive oaks by the Rev. F.S. Hendricks, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Dayton. Mr. Gilbreath, a well-known newpaper man, is with the Associated Press in Atlanta. He is a brother of Sidney G. Gilbreath.

Misses Kate Thomas, Birdie Wenning and Mildred Boddy have returned from a visit to Mrs. Eugene Bryan on Waldens Ridge.
