Sunday, June 1

A most exciting trip up the Tennessee River was given in honor of 200 University of Chattanooga students and various preparatory and high school students by Mr. John A. Patten on the steamer James N. Trigg. Cap’t Wilkey of the Trigg was assisted by Dr. Race, Dean Bovard, Miss Duffy, Miss Grace McCallie, Miss Annetta Trimble, Prof. W.A. Evans, and Prof. and Mrs. George Davis. Refreshments were served by the boys of the University YMCA, with Creed Bates in charge.

News has been received by C.S. Timothy that his son, Christopher, has won an oratorical medal at Spring Hill, where he is a student. The life of Admiral Raphael Semmes was discussed by six contestants to prove his undeniable right to be placed among the immortals. The Mobile Register complimented Christopher’s speech highly.

Monday, June 2

Mrs. Frances Huffaker and children will leave this week for Galveston, Texas, to visit her brother. Miss Frank Luther of Midland, Texas, is visiting Mrs. H.D. Huffaker.

D.S. Henderson, R.C. Richard, Scott Probasco, Garner Watkins, T.P. Hagan, Winthrop Barr, John Marshall, and Ed McCallie will leave today for the Southern Associational Golf Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.

The Redpath Chautauqua will open this week under the auspices of the YMCA. Some of the programs are Ben Greet Players, Ex-Gov. John W. Folk, lecturer; Ralph Bingham, humorist; and Bohumir Kryl and his 30-piece band.

Tuesday, June 3

R.A. Stewart of Texas is the guest of his sister, Mrs. L.N. Spears. Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Mauzy, and Rev. A.D. Stewart have returned to their homes in Nashville after a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Spears.

Misses Margaret Read and Mary Louise Spurlock will return from Smith College to spend the summer here.

The citizens of North Chattanooga voted overwhelmingly Monday against incorporation. This is the second time they have voted their opposition.

Wednesday, June 4

The first of the season’s June weddings was the elaborate and beautiful marriage of Miss Alice Sharp and Samuel Bartow Stang, celebrated Tuesday night at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. J.W. Bachman officiated; Dr. Loaring Clark assisted. A reception followed at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Sharp. The young couple has gone to the North Carolina mountains on their wedding trip.

Miss Ann Warner has left Austria and will arrive in New York this week. Miss Warner has been traveling through the southern part of Europe for seven months.

Thursday, June 5

Chattanooga High School Commencement was held Wednesday night in the City Auditorium. More than 4,000 people attended the exercises, where 57 graduates received their diplomas from Commissioner H. Clay Evans. Principal Prof. H.D. Wyatt directed the Glee Clubs with Miss Annette Trimble, accompanist. The valedictory address was given by Raymond Barnes; Miss Kathleen Stewart delivered the salutatory address.

Miss Gertrude Oehmig entertained Wednesday in honor of her cousin, Miss Jessie Hines of Rome, Ga.

Miss Cecelia Embrey has gone to New York, where she will sail for a summer’s travel abroad.

Miss Dorothy Lynde will go to Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind., Saturday to attend commencement. Her brother, Charles, is a member of the graduating class.

Friday, June 6

The opening session of the 8th Annual Convention of the Comptrollers and Accountants Association at the Hotel Patten today was welcomed by Mayor T.C. Thompson and Frank E. Mahoney. Over 100 delegates are in attendance. S.M. Wilhite, comptroller of Louisville, Ky., is the president of the association. Mrs. C.O. Beaver is chairman of the local committee. Many social events have been planned for the convention.

Miss Aileen Brazleton of Amarillo, Texas, who has been the guest of Mrs. Garnett Carter, is now the guest of Mrs. Will Carmack on Missionary Ridge.

Candles and kerosene lamps were suddenly displaced Wednesday night at Signal Mountain Inn, when a current of electricity flashed on. It was an exciting affair for both management and guests.
