LearningRx Chattanooga offering discounted brain skills assessment

To observe National Autism Awareness Month, LearningRx of Chattanooga is offering 50 percent off cognitive skills assessments to children and teens with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. According to autismspeaks.org, autism affects one in 88 children and is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.

Through Tuesday, April 30, parents can accompany anyone under the age of 19 to the center at 2040 Hamilton Place Boulevard in Chattanooga to receive their discounted assessment, which measures brain skills like processing speed, attention, logic and reasoning, visual and auditory processing, and memory. The results of the assessment can help students decide which steps to take in strengthening weak cognitive skills.

“With Autism Spectrum Disorder, it’s common to see cognitive weaknesses with executive functioning,” says LearningRx Chattanooga Director, Michelle Hecker Davis. “These include things like verbal reasoning, working memory and planning. Although kids with autism do tend to fixate on particular things, it’s typical to see attention struggles. It’s not surprising, considering that there can be overlap in other symptoms of ADHD and autism, such as hyperactivity and impairments in social skills.”

Under the new diagnostic definition, Autism Spectrum Disorder now works as an umbrella diagnosis unifying previously distinct subtypes, including Asperger’s, pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise specified, childhood disintegrative disorder, and autistic disorder. The revision will be published in the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in May 2013.
