Violin & piano concert at Covenant College

Violinist Sooyoung Yoon and pianist Ji Neyng You will be in concert at Covenant College performing works by Bach, Beethoven, LeClair, and Saint-Sa?ns. A professor of violin at the Kyungbuk National University in Daegu, South Korea, Yoon began to play the violin at the age of nine, and won the Korean National Competition at 16. He studied under the master violinist Jascha Heifetz, and is an active soloist, recitalist, and master class teacher. Ji Neyng You has been a soloist with Daegu Symphony, Busan Philharmonic, Chungnam Philharmonic, and Prime Philharmonic in Korea. She’s currently an adjunct piano professor at Baptist Theological University in Daejeon, Korea. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the chapel. The suggested donation at the door is $10.

Flashback Prom to benefit Speech & Hearing Center

Chattanooga Friends will host its third annual Flashback Prom from 8 p.m. to midnight at the DoubleTree Hotel. The DoubleTree Hotel, located at 407 Chestnut Street, will provide late night munchies and offer a cash bar.  Proceeds will benefit The Speech & Hearing Center’s Achieve Learning Center.  Tickets are $25 per person or $40 for a couple in advance, and $30 per person at the door.  Advance tickets are available at FlashbackPromChatt.EventBrite.com.

Salvation Army honors Black History Month

with lunch and performance

In honor of Black History month, the Salvation Army will The Word Players from Knoxville. The group will present their Black History Touring Show of “Lift Every Voice” by Doug Floyd at noon.  “Lift Every Voice” is a one-act presentation in drama, song and dance that tells the story of the Harlem Renaissance. Lunch will be provided during the discussion time after the performance. The event is free but donations will be appreciated. Bigfoot hike to Mushroom Rock

The Sierra Club, Cherokee Group and Outdoor Chattanooga will host a family hike to look for Bigfoot at Mushroom Rock beginning at 2 p.m. from the Shackleford Ridge Park ballfields parking lot on Signal Mountain. The easy two-mile  hike will follow the trail of Bigfoot, the skunk ape who has been seen numerous times in the area. Hikers are urged to wear sturdy shoes, dress appropriately for the weather and bring water. Reported encounters with Bigfoot have included bluff charges, guttural screams from the underbrush and stick breaking. No reservations are necessary for the hike. Small children should be prepared to walk or be carried. The trail is not suitable for strollers. City of Chattanooga public meeting

The City of Chattanooga will conduct a public meeting from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church, located at 1127 Garfield Street, to discuss the Central Avenue Roadway Extension. Currently beginning the environmental portion of the preliminary engineering phase, the project will extend Central Avenue from its current terminus at Blackford Street and Cleveland Avenue to Riverside Drive. The City of Chattanooga also proposes to extend and widen Wiehl Street to intersect the proposed Central Avenue extension. The primary purpose of this meeting is to present the project timeline and inform the public of the start of environmental and technical studies regarding the project. Preliminary drawings regarding the proposed roadway cross-section and project timeline will be displayed. There will be a short presentation and a brief question and answer period. The public is invited to ask questions and make comments during the meeting. Representatives of the City of Chattanooga and the project design team will be available to answer questions concerning any aspect of the project.
