Woody Guthrie tribute

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 175 will hold an open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Noted actor Randy Noojin will present his one-hour solo show, “Hard Travelin’ With Woody,” at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, although donations to the Community Kitchen will be accepted. Reservations are requested by August 28. Refreshments will be provided. The IBEW Local 175 is located at 3922 Volunteer Drive.

Antique clock and watch collectors exhibit

The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors will hold its annual mid-south regional meet at the Hamilton County Convention & Trade Center. A free exhibit featuring over 50 antique clocks from the 1800s will be on display on August 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and September 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A guided walking tour of the exhibit will take place September 1 at 11:30 p.m. A lecture designed for the general public titled “The Art and Science of Collecting Antique Clocks” will take place September 1 at 10:30 a.m. Finally, the society will hold a free “Antique Roadshow” for the public on September 1 between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Take your clocks and watches for a free evaluation by their experts.

Ooltewah Nursery kicks off free fall workshops

Ooltewah Nursery at 11 a.m. will host a free seminar by Clayton Beaty titled “Secrets to Soil Preparation.” Beaty, the owner of Beaty Fertilizer in Cleveland, Tenn., will share how to create a good foundation for plants. This free seminar marks the kick-off of Ooltewah Nursery’s Fall Workshop series, which aims to provide educational opportunities as a service to the community at large.

Street Smarts for Bike Share

Outdoor Chattanooga will host special sessions of its free Street Smarts Cycling Seminar for users of the Bike Chattanooga Bicycle Transit System at 6 p.m. on the above dates. Outdoor Chattanooga is located in Coolidge Park. Adults and kids ages 16 and older are invited take a short class on how to ride a bicycle in city traffic. They’re going to cover the rules of the road and then take an optional ride through the downtown area on Bike Chattanooga bicycles. Ross’s Landing History Walk

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a special urban walk through Renaissance Park and Ross’s Landing beginning at 6 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga. The public is invited to join the leisurely three-mile walk to learn about the importance of downtown Chattanooga and Moccasin Bend to Native American History. No reservations necessary. Crabtree Farms’ fall plant sale

Crabtree Farms will hold its annual fall plant sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. People looking for the perfect fall plants for their backyard or community garden will be able to purchase plants started in Crabtree’s greenhouses, check out vendor booths from local artisans, and attend free workshops taught by Crabtree’s Joel Houser. The event will also provide an opportunity for people to ask questions, get advice and meet others in the community who are making the choice to grow their own! All ages are welcome.

McKamey Animal Center Adopt-A-Thon

Hundreds of adoptable dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes will be waiting for their forever home at the Petsmart on Gunbarrel Road. Each pet will be either spayed or neutered and have received his or her age appropriate vaccines. McKamey will be distributing food, refreshments and prizes. Hours include noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There will be an adoption fee for each pet. Call 423-305-6500 for more information.

Cannons roar again

Park visitors are invited to experience the “rolling thunder” as a complete battery of cannons returns to Chickamauga Battlefield in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., in celebration of the 149th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga. Living historians will be firing the cannons throughout the weekend. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., park rangers and historians will provide tours and programs within the park that will describe the history of the battle and the men involved. Fireside at Greenway Farm

Outdoor Chattanooga will host family nights by the campfire at Greenway Farm every Thursday beginning September 20 and running through October 18. Bring camp chairs and marshmallows, and enjoy family music and entertainment from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Lou Wamp Band will play bluegrass on September 7. Outdoor Chattanooga has dubbed September 27 Lodge Cast Iron Pot Luck. Bring your Dutch oven, skillet, cornbread baker or griddle and something to share. Before the program, bring the family to the farm for some canoeing on North Chickamauga Creek. From 6 to 7 p.m., Outdoor Chattanooga will have canoes, paddles and lifejackets at the farm’s south launch for people to use on the creek. All equipment and staff supervision will be provided. Life jackets are sized for adults and kids ages 5 and older. Children younger than age 5 should have their own life jackets. Birding Tour by Bicycle

Outdoor Chattanooga will host a guided birding by bicycle tour on the Tennessee Riverpark 9 to 11:30 a.m. beginning at its Coolidge Park facility. Volunteer birders from the Chattanooga Audubon Society and Tennessee Ornithological Society will lead the birding. Beginners are welcome. Bring your own bicycle or borrow one from the Outdoor Chattanooga Mobile Bicycle Fleet. First Things First 15-year anniversary

Jordan Thomas Foundation Low Country Boil and Golf Classic

The Jordan Thomas Foundation, a local foundation that provides prosthetics for children of traumatic injury, will host its 6th Annual Low Country Boil and Golf Classic on a Sunday and Monday. The Sunday event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature traditional low country fare, drinks, a silent auction and music by the Ben Friberg Trio and Priscilla & Little RicKee Band.
