Saturday, May 25

Miss Gertrude Perry left Friday for her home in Chicago after a visit with Miss Maude Rathmell on West Sixth Street.

Miss Wessie Bowen and Miss Katherine Betts will return June 1 from Randolph-Macon College in Virginia.

Sunday, May 26

News of interest is the announcement of the engagement of Miss Lucile Frances Winkler to John Read Voight. Miss Winkler is the daughter of Mrs. William E. Winkler of Louisville, Ky.

Mr. Voight, a graduate of Harvard law School, is practicing law in Jeffersonville, Ind. He is the son of H.W. Voight of Chattanooga.

Misses Margaret-Caldwell and Keller Nolan are the “sweet girl graduates” at Girls Preparatory School this year.

Monday, May 27

Miss Nona Sanders, a teacher at City High School, will leave for New York to spend the summer studying languages.

Ralph Wardlaw is home from Georgia Tech for a week’s stay. He was accompanied home by John Stearnes.

Miss Nettie Blocker and Cecil Overend are leaving soon to spend the summer in California.

Tuesday, May 28

Many friends were saddened by the death of Capt. Herman W. Grant. He was a man of sterling integrity, a Christian gentleman, courteous and greatly beloved. Funeral services will be from his home, “Blowing Rock,” with Dr. E.A. Elmore of the Second Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in National Cemetery with full military honors with G.A.R. comrades participating.

Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Eager have returned from a three-week trip to California.

Wednesday, May 29

Mrs. J.H. Davenport entertained with an informal luncheon at her home on Missionary Ridge in honor of Mrs. James Love of Pauls City, Okla., who is visiting Mrs. W.E. Love.

Invitations have been issued for the wedding of Miss Annielou Miller and J. Elmer Gross. The wedding will take place on June 12.

Miss Blossom Swift of Texas and Miss Nell Bondurant of Kentucky will come with Miss Ellen Converse for a visit from the University of Tennessee.

Thursday, May 30

Mr. and Mrs. George Becking have issued invitations to the wedding of their daughter, May Emma, to Quay Theodore Morgan. The wedding will take place June 12.

Mr. and Mrs. George W. Nixon have issued invitations to the wedding of their daughter, Shelly, to Ralph William Bell on June 11.

Miss Katherine Keith of Athens came yesterday for a visit with Miss Louise Frazier on Oak Street.

Friday, May 31

Wilbur Wright, known as “Father of Aviation,” died today of typhoid fever in Dayton, Ohio. His father, the venerable Bishop Milton Wright, was at his bedside. Wilbur and his brother Orville were known for their achievement with the airplane. The whole world is greatly saddened with the passing of such a young man of great promise.

McCallie School commencement exercises were held Thursday night, with Dr. W.E. Thompson as the speaker. There were 11 graduates in the 1912 class.
