Beach Blanket Movie Night

Kick off Memorial Day weekend with Blanket Movie Night at Chester Frost Park Beach. It’s FREE! The public is invited to bring chairs or blankets or watch the movie from a boat. Sound will be broadcast via FM transmission. Due to licensing restrictions, the sponsors cannot mention the name of the movie. Family activities will be held before the movie and concessions will be sold. The movie will begin at dark. Erwin Marine Sales, the University of Phoenix and Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department are sponsoring the event. For more information about the movie, call 842-6748.

Free concert at the library

The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Wind Quintet will perform at the downtown branch of the Chattanooga Public Library at 2:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend.

Internet genealogy workshop

The Chattanooga Public Library will hold a free genealogy workshop at its Eastgate branch at 10 a.m. Because many of the newly released 1940 records have not yet been indexed, Mary Helms, head of the geneology and history department, will guide participants through step-by-step search methods. In addition, the Chattanooga Public Library has purchased subscriptions to several leading genealogical databases for use by patrons. These include Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest Online, Fold3, World Vital Records, American Ancestors by the New England Historic Genealogical Society and the Tennessee Sanborn Maps. Helms will also cover the use of these and other Internet resources in the workshop. Pre-registration is required. To reserve your place, email helms_m@lib.chattanooga.gov.

“Stop the Violence” cookout

Hope for the Inner City, an East Chattanooga ministry dedicated to helping the urban poor become self-sufficient, will host a “Stop the Violence” cookout June 5 to launch its Summer Leadership Camps. The cookout will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at its campus, located at 1800 Roanoke Avenue, across from the Harriet Tubman Housing Development.

Attendees can meet summer campers and families seeking a safe haven from gangs and get involved with the summer camps as a volunteer or supporter. There is no charge for attending the cookout, but reservations are required at (423) 698-3178 or info@Hope4theInnercity.org.

Splash into Spring paddle sports festival

Outdoor Chattanooga will host Splash into Spring, their annual paddle sports festival and demo event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TVA Chickamauga Dam. The public is invited to learn about kayaking, canoeing, standup paddle boarding, dragon boating and sailing. The event is free and open to the public. Jewish film series

Jewish-themed films produced in Germany, Argentina, Israel and the U.S. will be shown Wednesdays evenings at 7 p.m. through June 20 at the Jewish Cultural Center, located at 5461 North Terrace Road. The films are suitable for those 16 and older. Tickets are $5 per person and include popcorn. Soft drinks are available for purchase. The schedule is as follows: May 30: “A Matter of Size”; June 6: “Ahead of Time”; June 13: “Anita”; and June 20: “David.”

Patriotic Organ Concert

American organist Tom Trenney will be the featured performer at the Chattanooga Music Club’s annual Patriotic Organ Concert. He will play the Auditorium’s 1924 Austin Pipe Organ. Trenney has extensive mastery of organ technique, is a superior improviser and is known for his unique accompaniments to silent films. As part of his program, he will accompany two silent films – “One Week” starring Buster Keaton and “Big Business” starring Laurel & Hardy. Trumpeter Zachery Schmidt and drummer DeJuan Hogans will join Trenney, who will also play during the patriotic salute to veterans and military personnel. Admission is free. Donations are welcome.
