Dr. Joe W. Goss, assistant superintendent for general administration in the city school system for more than two years, has resigned effective July 1 to accept a position with George L. Wright & Co., management consultant firm of Atlanta.

Attendance at the fourth annual Lions Club’s Free Glaucoma Clinic at First Christian Church Thursday was 4,710. Glaucoma symptoms were found in 145 of those tested. Sixteen members of the Chattanooga Ophthalmologists Association gave their time and services.

Sunday, May 13

Sunday afternoon, the Third Annual Arts Festival ended with the concertn by the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra in the auditorium of Brainerd High School. Fourteen cultural organizations in the city make up the membership of the Chattanooga Allied Arts Council. Between 400 and 500 music lovers attended the concert.

Mrs. A.H. Tessman was honored as “McCallie Mother of the Year” at the annual Mother’s Day parade of McCallie School on Alumni Field.

Monday, May 14

Jerry Burden, red-haired, freckle-faced, 11-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Haskell P. Burden, was chosen Billy Bragger, 1962, Sunday afternoon from 30 contestants at Lake Winnepesaukah to succeed Wesley Brown.

Almost 300 Junior Achievement participants, advisers and guests attended a “Future Unlimited” banquet at Hotel Patten Monday night.

Tuesday, May 15

Hamilton County’s 223-acre lakefront along Dallas Bay was opened to the public Tuesday with its sand beach and swimming area, concession stand, picnic area and bath house ready for the 1962 summer season.

Wednesday, May 16

The Chattanooga Board of Education Wednesday approved the establishment of evening high schools for adults at Kirkman Technical High and Howard High starting next fall.

Siskin Steel and Supply Co. received a jury of view judgment Wednesday for $986,625 in the condemnation of part of its South Chattanooga plant for freeway easement.

The Chattanooga Junior Chamber of Commerce Wednesday night elected Howard Sompayrac, Jr., president to succeed Ismail Akbay. The following were elected to the five vice-presidential posts: Herbert McCartney, Douglas A. Meyer, Frank N. Seal, Robert Womack and Howard Reed.

Tuesday, May 17

Dr. Louis Swanson, principal of East Lake Junior High School, has resigned to accept a position at the University of Kentucky, it was announced Wednesday at the meeting of the city school board. Dr. Swanson has been a member of the Chattanooga Public School system for 12 years.

Friday, May 18

Robert G. LeTourneau, widely known as “God’s businessman,” will come to Chattanooga to address a dinner meeting of the Christian Business Men’s Committee of Chattanooga Saturday night at Wimberly Inn, it was announced by Dr. J. park McCallie, president of the club.

A special plea that Chattanoogans turn their community into “a city of flags,” Friday was made Wednesday by members of the Armed Forces Week Committee. All citizens are urged to help in the all-out display of flags.
