Wills for Heroes Foundation will be in Chattanooga May 19

The Tennessee Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and the Wills for Heroes Foundation will be in Chattanooga May 19 to provide basic wills, living wills and powers of attorney to first responders and their spouses or partners without cost.

“If a person dies without a will, Tennessee’s intestate statutes and precedent will determine who will receive the individual’s property. Your loved ones’ grief will be overwhelming; a clear expression of your intent, desires, and wishes might help ease some of this inevitable burden. While no one enjoys thinking about an untimely death, it is best that you express your wishes through a written document,” said attorney Jason Demastus.

Lawyers will be at the Sheriff’s Department Annex, located at 6233 Dayton Boulevard, producing notarized legal documents for first responders and their spouses.

Volunteer lawyers will be available for appointments from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment, contact Jason Demastus at 423-756-7000 or jason.demastus@hcdatn.org.

This service might be unavailable to persons whose estate exceeds $300,000 due to the complexity of the estate and the limited amount of time available to complete the legal documents. To determine if the value of your estate is over $300,000, add together your cash, personal property, stocks and bonds, real estate equity, savings and the cash value of a whole or universal life insurance policy.

For more information, visit the Wills for Heroes Foundation Web site at www.willforheroes.org. Those who sign-up must complete the Estate Planning Questionnaire they will receive before the event date, as it must be submitted at the time of the appointment. Spouses must complete a separate questionnaire.
