Blood Assurance is accepting applications for the Crystal Green Memorial Scholarship. Applications must be postmarked by March 31. The application process includes creating a marketing plan for a blood drive. Twelve students will each be awarded a one-time one thousand five hundred dollar scholarship, made possible through the Blood Assurance Foundation.
Blood donation history is not considered during the application process. However, students must attend a high school that participates in Blood Assurance’s Project Lifeline program, a series of blood drives hosted by area high schools. Identifying information, such as name and school, are not revealed to the panel of judges, which consists of members of the Blood Assurance Foundation’s board of directors.
The scholarship is named in memory of Crystal Green, a graduate of Dade County High School. Green was a student at Georgia Southern University before suffering a setback with aplastic anemia. After hundreds of hours of platelet transfusions and a bone marrow transplant, Crystal lost her long battle in November 1998, shortly after turning 21. In her honor, Blood Assurance established a scholarship fund in 1999 for high school students seeking to better themselves and aspiring to give back to the communities.
Green’s legacy has helped more than 130 local students achieve their pursuit of higher education.
In addition to the Crystal Green Memorial Scholarship, Blood Assurance offers a Cord of Courage program to recognize students for completing six or more blood donations during their high school career. Participating schools allow the students to wear a red cord during commencement ceremonies. The deadline for applying to receive a Cord of Courage is May 16.
