Now open - Chickamauga Battlefield’s Alexander Bridge. Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park have annouced that Alexander Bridge has reopened to motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The bridge has been closed for structural renovation since last June. Renovation work will continue for a few months, but the bridge will remain open.

Outdoor Chattanooga Winter Workshops begin

Outdoor Chattanooga’s Winter Workshop series features introductory classes and seminars that help participants engage in outdoor activities, live an outdoor lifestyle and protect the environment. Some of the topics to be covered include building a wooden boat, getting medicine from your weeds; bicycles for the recreational cyclists, how to build a bat box, preserving your land in a conservation trust, and responsible caving. Works by Duncan

Duncan, a Brooklyn native and Chattanooga sculptor, will present his “investigations of creating objects in space that imply life” through February 29 at Bessie Smith Cultural Center. MANIFEST art series debut

The MANIFEST arts series will make its 2012 debut at The Camp House, located at 1427 Williams Street, on January 13. The 15th edition of the monthly showcase will feature Dana Rogers and Noah Collins, two of Chattanooga’s most iconic musicians. Guild Trail Hike with the Chattanooga Trekkers

The Chattanooga Trekkers family hiking group will host a hike on the Ruby Falls section of Lookout Mountain’s Guild Trail on January 14 at 1 p.m. The rail trail was built on the historic route of the C & LM Broad Gauge Railroad, and follows its path up the mountain. Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and Tennessee Ornithological Society will host the annual Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival on January 14 and 15 at the Birchwood Elementary School.  The free event celebrates the yearly visit of thousands of Sandhill cranes to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. There will be guides with spotting scopes at the Refuge to help visitors view the cranes and other wildlife, speakers, workshops, films and children’s activities at the Birchwood Elementary School, and special Native American presentations at the nearby Cherokee Removal Memorial Park.

String Theory at the Hunter Spring Preview

String Theory will begin the spring portion of its 2011-2012 Season on January 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hunter Museum of American Art. String Theory at the Hunter is a chamber music series in its third season. It is produced through a partnership of the Hunter Museum of American Art and Lee University. The Importance of Being Earnest at the Chattanooga Theatre Center

The Chattanooga Theatre Center will debut its performance of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” the quintessential Oscar Wilde comedy, January 27 and 28 at 8 p.m.  In the classic play, dashing men-about-town John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff pursue fair ladies Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. Matters are complicated by the imaginary characters invented by both men to cover their on-the-sly activities – not to mention the disapproval of Gwendolen’s mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell.  Additional performances will take place in January and February.  Call 423-267-8534 for ticket information.
