50 years ago...




What was happening in Chattanooga in 1961 and 1962? Saturday, Dec. 30. Three to four inches of snow covered Lookout and Signal Mountains Thursday. The snowfall in Chattanooga measured 1.8 inches, making driving hazardous. County offices closed Saturday for three days New Year's holiday.

Mrs. Frances Jean Huckaba, 26, wife of Dr. John E. Huckaba, was killed in a traffic crash Saturday evening at Marlboro and Mayfair Avenues in Brainerd. A car driven by Dr. Huckaba collided with a car driven by James R. Fisher.

Sunday, Dec. 31

Real estate transactions reached an all-time high in Chattanooga in 1961, when the value of construction exceeded the figure of 1960. James R. Chamberlain, Realtor, said that a check of records at the courthouse shows property having an indicated value of $70,673,075.29 changed hands in Chattanooga and Hamilton County.

The Chattanooga Junior Chamber of Commerce organized the first high school Jaycee Club in Tennessee this year at Brainerd High School, a panelist announced on the club’s weekly television program, “Question of the Week,” on WRGP-TV, Sunday.

Monday, Jan. 1

The Hamilton County Quarterly Court in regular session Monday named James Wann as county judge pro tempore for 1962. Mr. Wann has served in this capacity since his election by the court last October to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Stacy E. Nelson.

Thirty-nine persons died in traffic accidents in city and county in 1961, including 21 men, 12 women and six children.

The annual New Year’s Day party of the Chattanooga Half Century Club was held Monday afternoon at Hotel Patten.

Tuesday, Jan. 2

Paul W. Curtis, Sr., retired electrical contractor, died Monday after an extended illness. Mr. Curtis established Curtis Electric in 1922. He operated the company until he retired in 1950.

John O. Cook, superintendent of Sagauro National Monument, Ariz., has been appointed superintendent of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.  He succeeds Charles S. Dunn, who retired in October after serving as superintendent of Chickamauga Park since 1938.

Wednesday, Jan. 3

Mrs. Lenora Mull Atlee of Signal Mountain, widow of Frank Atlee, died Tuesday afternoon in a local hospital. Mrs. Atlee retired recently after teaching 31 years in Chattanooga schools.

The election of Donald S. Lawhorn as vice-president and treasurer of the Volunteer State Life Insurance was announced Wednesday by Cecil Woods, Volunteer president.

Thursday, Jan. 4

Holiday Inn of America, Inc., Wednesday announced it had reached an agreement with W. J. Bell for the transfer of his Belvoir Hotel Courts on Brainerd Road into ownership of the coast-to-coast motel chain.

Checks paid by banks here in 1961 established an all-time high of $4,127,335,994, the Chattanooga Clearing House Association reported Wednesday. The total compares with $3,942,998,808 in 1960.

Friday, Jan. 5

Mayor Olgiati said that as a member of the City Commission he would not vote to take the city’s $5 automobile sticker off the books. The Chattanooga ordinance requires the automobile owner to buy a $5 sticker if he lives in the city, works in the city or drives into the city as many as 30 times a year.
