Brainbuster — Make your brain tingle!

Since recently visiting a Battleship, The USS Constellation, I decided to see if your knowledge on our country’s Navy History is any better than mine. Good luck! 1. USS Arizona was launched prior to the start of WWI and commissioned before the U.S. entered WWI as BB-39, and was in what “ship class” of new powerful Super Dreadnought battleship? Oklahoma Class; Arizona Class; Pennsylvania Class; Texas Class.

2. USS TEXAS (BB-35) was designated as Flagship of what fleet in 1931? The United States Atlantic Fleet; The United States Gulf of Mexico Fleet; The United States Pacific Fleet; The United States Fleet.

3. The deck below the flight deck is home to the Ready Rooms for the individual squadrons embarked in a carrier. When aviators refer to the flight deck, they also typically use an affectionate term for it. LA (for Landing Area); Roof; Land of the Quick and the Dead; Racetrack.

4. What makes the USS Utah Memorial unique compared to the other ship memorials. It requires permission to visit; It is not listed in the guides and brochures; You have to be accompanied by military personnel; All of these.

5. How many US battleships were built on the west coast? 6; 3; 1; 10.

6. Which of the following classes of US battleships fired the heaviest shell? New Mexico class; Colorado class; North Carolina class; Tennessee class.

7. Which US battleships engaged an enemy battleship during WW II? USS Iowa (BB-61), USS New Jersey (BB-62); USS South Dakota (BB-57), USS Texas (BB-34); USS Washington (BB-46), USS South Dakota (BB-57); USS Washington (BB-46), USS Massachusetts (BB-59).

8. Of the battleships in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, which was NOT sunk? USS Tennessee; USS West Virginia; USS California; USS Oklahoma.

9. What does CGN stand for? Guided Missile Cruiser (nuclear-powered); Combat Missile Cruiser; Guided Missile Cruiser (conventionally-powered); Guided Cruiser.

10. In the name CGN-35, what does the 35 mean? Commissioning sequence of the ship in the class; Hull number for administrative purposes; Number of times the name has been previously used on other vessels; Designates east or west coast home port, based on if the number is odd or even.

ANSWERS:

1. Pennsylvania Class. Launched in 1913 and commissioned in 1916 before the U.S. entry into WWI, the USS Arizona (BB-39) was the second of a two-ship class named for the USS Pennsylvania. USS Pennsylvania was sunk during atomic bomb tests in 1948, having survived WWII with eight battle stars!

2. The United States Fleet. In January of 1931, after a major refit in New York, the USS TEXAS was transferred to the Pacific for a six-year tour, and became the flagship of the entire U.S. Navy for a time.

3. Since Ready Rooms are located on the 0-3 levels, just below the flight deck, it is a “roof” over their heads and protection from noise on the flight deck.

4. All of these. The USS UTAH Memorial is more difficult to visit because of its location within the confines of a military reservation.

5. One. USS California (BB-44) is the only US battleship built on the west coast at Mare Island Navy Yard.

6. North Carolina class.

7. USS Washington (BB-46), USS Massachusetts (BB-59).

8. USS Tennessee.

9. Guided Missile Cruiser (nuclear-powered).

10. It is the Hull number for administrative purposes.
