What was happening in Chattanooga in 1960

Saturday, September 24
Gordon Street, Jr., and Charlotte Maclellan, two young Chattanoogans, were chosen by Martin Condon of Memphis, state coordinator for Volunteers for Nixon-Lodge, to head such an organization in Chattanooga. Headquarters for the new organization will be in the Maclellan Building.

Sunday, September 25
Fire severely damaged the roof section and heating and air conditioning systems of the Chattanooga Gas Company, 811 Broad Street, early Sunday morning. S.V. O’Lenie, president, said the cost to replace the damage would run possibly as high as $15,000 to $20,000.

Monday, September 26
Three local artists were represented in the 15th Southeastern Annual Art Exhibition in Atlanta:Lucille Demos, Joan Hed-man Ferger and James R. Franklin. Their paintings
were among some 75 selected from close to 1,000 entries submitted to hang in the show.

Wednesday, September 28
The city’s newest piece of fire equipment, a $45,000 aerial ladder, was named for Dr. James L. Fowle, city chaplain, in ceremonies in front of city hall.

Thursday, September 29
Cooper T. Holt, former National Commander of VFW has been named executive secretary of the Tennessee River and Tributaries Association.
