Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence opening high school in Alton Park

Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence is relocating its high school program to Alton Park ahead of the 2023-24 school year.

The school will host an open house Wednesday, Jan. 11 from 4-6 p.m. The building will also be open for tours Jan. 8, Jan. 25 and Feb. 8, 1-3 p.m.

CCSE High will feature an advanced STEM lab, a 12,000-square-foot regulation-size gymnasium and an 8,400-square-foot performance theater with a seating capacity of more than 800.

The building also will have large classrooms but cap class sizes at 25 students.

The 110,000-square-foot renovated building is located at 201 East 37th Street, the site of the former Alton Park Junior High School and Franklin Middle School.

CCSE launched its high school program with an inaugural class of ninth grade students in the fall of 2022 as a complement to its elementary and middle school programs, creating a K-12 tuition-free education option for families in Hamilton County.

CCSE High will add one grade level each year over the next three school years until capacity is reached at Grade 12.

The high school offers several unique programs, including an educational pathway for students interested in teaching called Teachers as Professionals and a STEM curriculum that includes drone, laser and robotics technology.

When CCSE High opens in 2023, its music program will include a steel drum band, a vocal program and choreography.

Other highlights of Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence High include sports (including basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, softball, cheerleading, track and field, cross-country and football), free breakfast and lunch for every student and free bus transportation.

All students living in Hamilton County are eligible to apply at www.chattanoogacharter.com, or visit the middle school campus for assistance in the application process.

The school is accepting applications for rising ninth and 10th grade students.
