Outdoor Chattanooga offering guided hikes along Cumberland Trail

Outdoor Chattanooga has announced the details of its 2020 Cumberland Trail Hiking Series.

The series will consist of several guided hikes along the Cumberland Trail, where participants will explore geological formations, discover seasonal flora and fauna and trek over creeks and across suspended bridges to the tops of ridges with waterfalls and scenic overlooks.

Outdoor Chattanooga has selected the hikes to be mostly downhill and will provide a shuttle to maximize the distance covered.

The Cumberland Trail is a scenic footpath along the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau that begins in Chattanooga’s backyard on Signal Mountain. Building and maintaining the trail is a grassroots effort driven by volunteers with the Cumberland Trail Conference.

Outdoor Chattanooga requires participants to have some hiking experience and be able to hike up to 6 miles continuously on terrain rated as moderately strenuous.

Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating parent or responsible adult. There is no cost but registration is required in advance as shuttle space is limited.

The Cumberland Trail Hiking Series will include:

Feb. 9: Mullens Cove Loops section 1

March 15: Prentice Cooper Poplar Springs to Suck Creek

April 19: Little Soddy to Deep Creek

May 10: Pep Boys to Little Soddy

June 6: Deep Creek to Big Soddy Gulf

Oct. 11: Mullens Cove Loops section 2

Nov. 15: Hwy 111 to Big Soddy Gulf

Dec. 6: Snooper Rock to Pot Point
