Briefs: Humane Society expands its spay, neuter access

The Humane Educational Society has completed its first week of surgeries at its newly opened low-cost spay and neuter clinic, marking a major milestone for the Chattanooga-based shelter.

The Community Spay and Neuter Clinic is open to all pet owners, regardless of county or jurisdiction, and costs up to 75% less than private veterinary practices in Tennessee. In addition to sterilization procedures, the clinic provides vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm testing for dogs and feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus testing for cats.

To help pet owners who still can’t afford the reduced fees, HES has launched the Spay It Forward fund, which allows donors to sponsor surgeries for animals in need. Donations and appointment bookings can be made at heschatt.org/spayandneuter.

The clinic operates by appointment only.

Police Academy applications now open

Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2025 session of the Chattanooga Police Department’s Community Police Academy, a free nine-week program offering residents a behind-the-scenes look at police work.

Set to run Thursdays Sept. 11-Nov. 6 at the department’s Amnicola Highway headquarters, the academy gives participants hands-on experiences ranging from driving simulators to live K9 demonstrations. Attendees will also learn how officers investigate crimes, train for daily challenges and serve the community.

The CPA is designed to foster dialogue between residents and police personnel, providing opportunities to discuss current issues, ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the department’s services.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, complete all required forms and pass a background check. Applications are due Aug. 29 and can be submitted online (chattanooga.gov/services/police/community-outreach/community-police-academy/form) or by emailing a completed form to cpdcommunityoutreach@chattanooga.gov.

Erlanger launches ErlangerNOW app

Erlanger Health System has introduced ErlangerNOW, a new mobile wayfinding app designed to help patients and visitors navigate its hospitals, clinics and parking areas.

The free app provides turn-by-turn, on-site directions at Erlanger Baroness Hospital, Erlanger East Hospital, Children’s Hospital at Erlanger and Erlanger Medical Mall. Beyond navigation, users can connect to MyChart, browse provider profiles, get real-time updates, bookmark favorite locations, and access other key patient resources.

Adam Schreader, Erlanger’s vice president of operations, called the technology “a game-changer” for the health system and the people it serves.

“It’s like having a friendly guide in your pocket, helping patients and families find their way through our hospitals with clear, step-by-step directions to everything from patient rooms to the cafeteria.”

The ErlangerNOW app is available for download through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
