An exhibit celebrating both the nation’s natural landscapes and the ideals of freedom and democracy is on display at the Jewish Cultural Center through Aug. 14.
“America the Beautiful” features works by 23 artists from across the United States. The exhibit includes paintings, photographs and mixed-media pieces that explore the country’s physical beauty while also examining contemporary themes related to freedom of expression and democratic values.
The exhibit is part of the nation’s observance of the 250th anniversary of the United States and draws inspiration from the 1895 poem by Katherine Lee Bates that later became the lyrics for the patriotic song “America the Beautiful.”
Bates wrote the poem after a journey to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado.
Organizers say the exhibit is designed to encourage reflection on both the American landscape and the freedoms that define the nation.
“This is an exhibit about who we are today as a nation,” says Michael Dzik, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga. “An opportunity to have an ongoing conversation about who we are and how we celebrate our people and our environment is depicted in this exhibit.”
The exhibit is open during gallery hours from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, during special events and by appointment. Admission is free, and parking is available at no charge.
The Jewish Cultural Center is located at 5461 North Terrace Road.
The facility, funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga, offers exhibits, educational programs, classes, social services and a preschool. Programs and exhibits are open to the public regardless of religious affiliation.
