Realtors engage in form-based code discussions

Listening to the inner voice

Bob Lype is a man of faith. As such, he believes in listening to “the inner voice.” While there are skeptics, like all good lawyers, Lype can make a strong argument in his favor.

Lype listened to the inner voice when he was a high school teacher in Hawkins County. Although he enjoyed teaching history and coaching tennis, when the inner voice said, “It’s time to do something different,” he believed it was important to listen.

Give that stupid, incompetent paralegal a raise
Under Analysis

“It was a mistake, and I’m sorry. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.”

Mistake, or devious and successful attempt to hoodwink some of the most highly paid attorneys in the world? Only the paralegal involved knows for sure (or perhaps her boss or her boss’ boss). For now, however, the official story was that it was a mistake, albeit one that saved a client over a BILLION dollars. Yes, that’s a BILLION, with a “B.”

Long live the pasquins
I SWEAR

Charlie Hebdo promotes itself as having a viewpoint that reflects “all components of left wing pluralism.” Its business is satire. It skewers Jews, Catholics, Protestants, and Muslims. It has twice been attacked by terrorists. The attack in 2011 didn’t kill anyone.

When investing, use the ‘Power of Three’
Financial Focus

Many factors will affect your results as an investor – and some of these factors are beyond your control, such as interest-rate movements or the eurozone debt crisis or the sales results of the companies in which you invest. However, as you work toward your financial goals, you will find that you actually have control over three of the most important drivers of investment success: time, money and return.

Say goodbye to spring cleaning
REALTOR ASSOCIATION President’s Message

Spring might be more than a month away, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to start cleaning. You’re already spending a lot of time indoors, where it’s warm and dry. You might as well improve your indoor air quality and rid your home of the dirt you accumulated last summer and fall.

Online process proves successful for Housing Voucher Program

The Chattanooga Housing Authority introduced a new online application process when it opened its Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list on Jan. 26. The process took only a few minutes and was completed by 6,533 applicants.

Using an online application allowed applicants to apply on their computers, tablets, and cell phones. In the past, thousands of applicants were forced to wait in line to fill out a hard copy application at the Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA) central office. Numbers collected by CHA staff members show a majority of applicants (62 percent) used a mobile device to complete the application. A total of 29 percent used computers to apply. Tablets were used to submit nine percent of applications. A vast majority of applicants were able to complete the process on their own, with no assistance. About 500 applicants chose to take advantage of the computer lab at CHA Central Office, where CHA staff members were available to walk them through the process. Local libraries also provided free computer access to those who needed it.

‘The Loft’ a thriller with few thrills
The Critic's Corner

Halfway through watching “The Loft,” I told a friend via text that they could have titled it “Men Are Pigs.” She replied, “I could have told you that.” I’m not sure if she was talking about the movie or men, but either way, that brief exchange was the most entertaining part of the two hours I spent in the theater watching the film.

Bop bopa-a-lu a whop bam boo! Tutti Frutti, oh Rudy!
Kay's Cooking Corner

This past month, there were several occasions where friends and church members had to carry food to someone’s house, either due to illness or a death in the family.

With the moves my family experienced and the sadness our friends and family experienced, January 2015 was not an easy month for us, and I’m glad it’s over. Hopefully, February will calm down for everyone involved.

Are We There Yet?

This guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, “Doc, uh, my brother’s crazy; he thinks he’s a chicken.” And, uh, the doctor says, “Well, why don’t you turn him in?” The guy says, “I would, but I need the eggs.” – Alvy Singer in “Annie Hall”

50th redux
View From The Cheap Seats

As I mentioned recently, the half century birthday has been haunting me for several years. In fact, in my mind, I’ve been 50 since early in my 48th year. Now that I’m past the actual date, it seems like I might have made the milestone bigger in my mind than it actually deserved. They say you’re only as old as you feel, and they might be on to something. My focus on this random date on my lifeline did nothing to improve my day-to-day existence. What it did do was make me worry about something I can’t control.

Do It Yourself

I have concluded that my husband feels that we hired a maid somewhere in the 13 years we have been together. Frankly, I am not sure that he is aware his shoes belong in his closet; for that matter, that anything belongs in his closet.

On a daily basis, I pick up at least three pairs of his shoes from my living room floor. Drives. Me. Crazy. Therefore, I have been on a mission to rectify this situation, which has proven quite difficult since I really do not have any space for something of this extent. Here’s to me wishing we had purchased a home with a mudroom!

For the next several weeks, I’ll be involved in my county sheriff’s citizen academy, where I’ll have the opportunity to learn a whole lot about a department that most of us take for granted - except when we need them to get us out of a bad situation. Now, this academy isn’t going to make me into my hero, Cordell Walker, from “Walker Texas Ranger” fame, but it will give me insight into the day-to-day operation of the sheriff’s department, and allow me to see what it’s like on the other side of the badge.

What was going on in Chattanooga in 1915?
