The first step

They say a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. How many times have you recognized your need to start a “journey” and failed to take even the first step? How is it that we can so easily identify the things we need to do in life, but are so often unable to take even the first step in the right direction? We know how to get to where we want to go, but we refuse to turn in the direction that will get us there.

Judge does not want oral arguments posted online

Judge Frank G. Clement, Jr., of the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Middle Section, is not opposed to posting oral arguments on the Internet – with one exception: when the contents of the arguments might result in minor children being subjected to Internet bullying, harassment and abuse. In a January 14, 2013 letter to the Tennessee Bar and judiciary titled “Help protect children of domestic litigation from Internet abuse,” Judge Clement outlines his concern regarding the posting of oral arguments on the Internet, and urges the Tennessee Supreme Court to scrap the program before it begins this spring. Here is the letter, re-published in its entirety with Judge Clement’s permission:

I Swear
What tangled webs of ego

In December, the star athlete was in New York for the festivities surrounding the presentation of a major sports award. The media were all over him, and he, thus, was on his best behavior – perhaps. He was, I take it, on that circuit that athletes apparently are put on by silent agents, wherein they get their pictures taken while bringing cheer to people with bleak futures – such as sportswriters.

Amazing recycling facts!

My family recycles anything that Waste Management will take. I’ve always been “recycle conscious.” When I was in high school, I spearheaded a group of about 20 or 30 friends to clean-up Riverside Drive in the downtown area of Memphis.

Are We There Yet?

I wrote last week about finding my grandfather’s letter to my grandmother from back in the fall of 1931. I actually discovered two letters. The second one he dated “Saturday night,” which I found out was October 25, based on an event he writes about.

Black Forest Cheesecake for your Valentine!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and I wouldn’t dare allow that to slip by without some scrump-tillicious (that’s my new word for “wonderful”) chocolate thingy. And I just happen to have a recipe in front of me – one I made last year, and that is, as my daughter says, “Ah. Maze. Ing.”

What’s happening with Cuban real estate?

In November of 2011, for the first time in approximately 50 years, Cuba officially legalized the buying and selling of private property for citizens and permanent residents, a policy decision many expected to have major implications for real estate in the economically embattled country.

What'd They Say?

Fill in the blanks in the quote using the following words:

into, soul, whispered, twas, twas, ear, kissed

“For  _____ not _____ my _____ you _____, but into my heart.  _____ not my lips you _____, but my _____.”

The Critic's Corner
One HECK of a last stand

I weep for action movies. Many have become cartoons with bits and pieces of human beings inserted into them. Then, when a great flick finally comes along that does things old school, with cameras and stunts instead of computer animated hijinks, no one goes to see it.
