Bringing a bit of humor to ‘hectic, chaotic’ arena
But justice is an obligation Ables says he takes seriously

Judge Larry Ables’ courtroom in General Session Court is lined with the dignified portraits of his predecessors, robed figures whose mastery of the law and aspirations of public service led them to the bench. This gallery of heroes watches over Ables, 53, as he does his part to move more than 50,000 cases through Hamilton County’s General Sessions pipeline each year.

When may a judge decide a case without a jury?

One of the keystones of the American judicial system is the jury. The jury represents the people in the judicial process, and decides factual questions of liability in civil cases and guilt or innocence in criminal cases.

In this way, juries provide a critical limit on the power of federal judges, who do not have to stand for election and have life tenure to protect their independence from outside pressure. The jury’s essential role in our government is embodied in the Constitution and mentioned in the Declaration of Independence.

From left: Jeff Granillo, Hal North and Justin Powers. Tournament sponsors included Pinnacle Financial Partners and the Hamilton County Herald. SquareOne Holding Company provided beer, while Chattanooga Coca Cola Bottling Company delivered water and soft drinks.

It’s a family affair for Bosinger
Children play their own roles in family business

Children are mirrors who reflect the world around them. Much like they can be the spitting image of their parents, they can also mimic their behavior. This is something for homebuyers and sellers who are thinking about asking Megan Bosinger to be their Realtor to consider.

Five tasks to complete with winter coming

With guest season and the holidays coming fast and furious, you want to be sure your home is cozy. Here are some tips from Stacey Freed at Houselogic.com on how to make that happen, along with a few other timely tips.

Wash your bed pillows

You love your old, perfectly-snugged-to-your-head pillow. But guess what’s also snug against your head? Fungus – four to 16 species, to be precise – which is not very welcoming! With fall being the height of guest season, you’ll want your guest pillows fresh, too, so pop them in the washing machine and dryer for an all-over clean feeling.

How to reduce your home winter energy costs

It’s that time of year when temperatures drop and home heating bills rise. As a homeowner, you can reduce your winter fuel costs in several ways ranging from simple, inexpensive changes to significant home modifications. Here are some straightforward tips to stay cozy and keep your winter fuel costs down this winter.

Another great option for ‘Big’ Chattanooga breakfast
Big Bad Breakfast offers competition to local favorites

There are several great ways to start a day. You can wake up while it’s still dark outside and get a jump on the work you have to do, you can go for a jog or do yoga, or you can meditate on the day ahead or read a devotional, if that’s your thing.

Financial Focus: Can you make charitable giving less ‘taxing’?

Once again, it’s the season of generosity. In addition to considering gifts for your loved ones, you might want to think about charitable gifts as well.

But what should you know before making gifts to charities? And what impact might these gifts have on your financial and tax situation?

Personal Finance: How to fight back against deceptive ‘dark patterns’

See if any of this sounds familiar:

n You can’t find an easy way to cancel an unwanted subscription, so you let it continue for another month – telling yourself you’ll try again later.

n You feel rushed into an online purchase you regret, but there’s no option to undo the transaction or demand a refund.

Career Corner: One sincere thank you at work is a gift worth giving

The holidays are here again. Along with the turkey, the stuffing and the loved ones, there’s more to consider. This season is a time of giving thanks.

In every job I have ever had, I have felt most thankful for those I work with each day. It’s not the work that makes things special. It’s not the perks that come with the job. It’s the people. And, it is those we work together with who allow our success to grow collectively.

Millennial Money: 5 steps to creating financial boundaries during holidays

Marketing ads, family functions and holiday gift-giving culture can make it feel impossible not to spend or, for some, overspend.

A 2023 NerdWallet survey found about half of Americans (52%) incurred credit card debt when shopping for gifts during the holidays last year, and almost a third (31%) of them still haven’t paid it off.

Vols have higher expectations than 8-4

Ramel Keyton was among the University of Tennessee seniors who went out on a high note at Neyland Stadium with milestones against rival Vanderbilt.

Keyton had four catches for a career-best 122 yards and two touchdowns. He was the first Vol with multiple receiving touchdowns in a game this season.

Coaches, teammates like what still-green Levis offers

School is in session for Will Levis. The rookie quarterback just completed his fifth NFL start and realizes there is still a lot for him to learn about playing the position at this level.

Even in his press conferences.

A couple of hours after his postgame presser following Sunday’s win over Carolina, Levis took to X (formerly Twitter) to correct himself for using the word “capitulated” when he said he meant to say “matriculated” in answering a question.

Levis at QB gives Titans roster options

The Titans have had more than their share of bad luck with draft picks over the past four years.

All the misses on picks like Isaiah Wilson, Caleb Farley and Dillon Radunz in the top of the draft have been well-chronicled, as well as the lack of contributions from middle- and late-round choices.

Colts at Titans: What to watch

Sunday, December 3 | 1 p.m.

Nissan Stadium, Nashville

It’s difficult to believe the Indianapolis Colts would be in the playoffs if the season ended now. Yes, the same Colts who committed to a rebuild around a raw rookie quarterback who suffered a season-ending injury in week five and are now in contention using former Jacksonville quarterback Gardner Minshew.
