Local accounting firm giving the profession a new look

James Hutcherson would like to dispel a myth or two about accountants. For starters, he says they’re not boring.
“From one week to the next, our staff could be working on a variety of engagements,” says the founding partner at Henderson, Hutcherson & McCullough. “It’s rarely a boring profession. On the contrary, it’s quite rewarding.”

St. Barnabas provides comprehensive living facilities for the aging

As cheers go up across Chattanooga to herald the arrival of new industry, people continue to plug away at places that have served the city for decades. Some of these institutions rose out of visionary leadership and have survived many difficult years, primarily due to the support of the Chattanooga community. These places

Are We There Yet?
More from the last decade
Don’t look back. Something may be gaining on you. – Satchel Paige
Continuing with a recap of the first 10 years of the 21st century.
In 2005 Pope John Paul II (born Karol Józef Wojty) died. He had served as the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church nearly 27 years, the second longest reign, behind Pope Pius IX. Other accomplishments during his 84-year life were as a soccer goalie, a librarian and a playwright.

I Swear...
In memoriam
My three nieces performed a miracle one Wednesday night last month.
With lipstick rosy fresh on their faces, family photos all around, bed jacket draped upon their sleeping mother, they shared with her a milkshake and a bite of her favorite chocolate. This ‘midst memories of growing up, jokes they’d heard a hundred times, tears of joy and the laughter of deep sadness, as a host of heavenly angels filled the room.

Weekly Indulgence
Artists have the ability to catch a single moment in time and keep it alive through the ages. Such is the case with an oil on canvas by Artist Courtenay James currently on exhibit at the River Gallery in the Bluff View Art District.
In “Two Olives,” James painted a common scene that happens often in pubs around the world: A man laughing with a friend, who we assume is out of the picture and the girl he is with is eyeing the bartender or perhaps a person farther down the bar. Her piecing eyes bore into you when viewing the painting. She holds two olives while awaiting another martini. When viewing this image, I became transfixed by the woman’s eyes and felt as if I was transported to that very moment.

Majestic 12 offers creature comforts, cutting edge experience

Back in the ’30s, when America was in the midst of the Great Depression, people went to the movies in droves. The same held true as the country entered the Second World War. But when television appeared on the scene in the ’40s, naysayers said it would bring about the end of Hollywood. To keep theaters full, the film industry upped its game, introducing richer imagery via the Technicolor process and installing huge screens that could handle movies filmed in Cinescope.

Professional development staff keeping Realtors on leading edge

When high schools and colleges hand out diplomas, they’re only kidding. A graduate isn’t done learning when he receives that coveted piece of paper; rather, he’s simply marking the end of one part of his educational journey and the beginning of another. No matter what profession he goes into, his attainment of knowledge and skills will go on as long as his career.

Agent balances real estate with full time job, family

The innate desire to become her own boss is what led Realtor Veronica Carter to change professions and enter the real estate arena.
“I thought, ‘OK, what can I make some money in, you know a substantial amount’ – so I’m thinking anyway – and still have to not really report to anyone? That’s really why I got into real estate,” Carter said. “Didn’t work out that way because now I am back working for somebody, but that was really why; I wanted to be my own boss basically.”

Kay’s Cooking Corner
When I was younger, I thought I would never live to see 2010 – it seemed so far away. However, I thought being 50 years old was ancient and I would never live to be that age either. I have been proven wrong on both accounts (obviously!), and I am really glad! In fact, now that I am “older,” 90 is looking kinda young to me!

Attorney’s progression from trials to ADR increases perspective

People change and grow throughout their lives, especially within their careers. Attorney Joe Manuel is no exception. He said he has evolved throughout his career from someone who “looked at everything like a nail because I only had a hammer … to a lawyer looking for a solution rather than one quick to draw the lawsuit thing.”

Critics Corner
Every December, film critics feel compelled to publish their lists of the best movies of the year. If you compiled these articles into a single document, you’d have to level an entire forest to acquire the necessary wood pulp. Of course, that’s not going to stop me from throwing in my two cents!
