Funeral services for Major Charles De McGuffey were held this morning at the first Presbyterian Church. His body was taken to Knoxville for burial. Many Chattanoogans accompanied his son, Marius McGuffey, on his sad mission.
The Rev. Samuel Sulcliff, rector of San Juan, Porto Rico, (Editor’s note: now known as Puerto Rico) Episcopal Mission, is the guest of Rev. and Mrs. Loaring Clark. Several teachers in the San Juan Mission are from East Tennessee. Bishop Charles E. Colmore is in charge.
Sunday, Oct. 1
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Schneider announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Mary Helen, to Ben Head of Atlanta. The wedding will take place in November.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Abeel have issued invitations to the marriage of their daughter, Katherine Winnie, to William Wiley Brooks, Jr., for Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 at Christ Church.
There will be an unusually large number of weddings this fall. Included in the number are: Miss Helen Wright and Brunswick Lowe; Miss Elizabeth Atlee and John C. Rigsby of Atlanta; Miss Mary Steward and William J. Mills of Columbia, S.C., Miss Katherine Betts and Max Seaton of Columbus, Ohio, and Miss Katherine Kaufman and Hugh Lynn Thatcher.
Monday, Oct. 2
Mr. and Mrs. Jo Anderson entertained with a barbecue at their home on Walden’s Ridge. Those present were Misses Ruth Dayton, Nancy and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, Pauline Colyar, Jennie and Stuart Anderson; Messrs. Dan Fain, Sam Huddleston of Murfreesboro, Carlton Wright and Wells Rather.
Dr. Stewart Lawwil and T. Walter Fred entertained with a house warming in their apartment in the Hardwick-Hogshead Apts. Saturday night. Mrs. Carrie Read Pickens chaperoned.
Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Van Dusen and Misses Mabel and Mamie Van Dusen have moved from Walden’s Ridge to the Dragoo cottage on Signal Mountain.
Tuesday, Oct. 3
Plans were made today for the fall and winter work of the Hearthfire Girls of the YWCA. Ethelwyn Porter is director and her assistant is Miss Margaret Ferger. They meet once a week at the “Y.”
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Erwin have moved into the McConnell home on East Fifth Street. Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Owensby of Los Angeles will arrive Wednesday to be their guests. Mrs. Owensby is the former Miss Queenie McConnell, Mrs. Erwin’s sister.
Mr. and Mrs. S.D. McReynolds and Mr. and Mrs. James Gager returned Sunday from a motor trip to Athens, Ga., where they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Young Talmadge.
Wednesday, Oct. 3
The Lookout Mountain Garden Club will soon start its beautification of the Highways on the mountain. The president, Mrs. Lucius Mansfield, said as soon as the West Brown Road is ready, they will plant Dogwood, Azaleas, mountain ferns, wildflowers and shrubs.
Dr. Dunbar Newell, retiring president of the Chattanooga Surgical Club, was host at a dinner at the Country Club for the new officers. Dr. H.L. Fancher, president; Dr. J. B. Haskins, vice president; Dr. G. Victor Williams, secretary and treasurer.
Thursday, Oct. 4
Mrs. H.L. Cook, chairman of the Baby Show at the Fair, heard lusty cries as 150 babies underwent tests for entrance in the show to be held next week at the Hamilton County – Interstate Fair. Drs. J.H. Atlee and J.A. Smith examined the children. Monday, there will be a Baby Parade before the grandstand.
Judge M.M. Allison, president of the Dixie Highway Association, and directors Richard Hardy, John Lovell and Carter Lynch left today for Lexington, Ky., to inspect the Dixie Highway between Chattanooga and Cincinnati. The plan is for the directorate to travel the entire highway.
Mrs. W.C. Robertson accompanied Misses Eva and Ella Lee Robertson to Washington where they will enter Cathedral School.
Mrs. Park McCallie will leave for Bristol to attend the synodical, after a visit with her sister, Mrs. Fleet in Flat Rock, N.C.
Friday, Oct. 6
Miss Wessie Bowen of Chickamauga is in Scottsboro, Ala., the guest of Mrs. Grady Jacobs.
Misses Tommy Duffy and Eula Jarnagin of the Girls Preparatory School entertained with a tea in honor of graduates of Randolph-Macon who were also graduates of GPS. They were Misses Mary Mitchell, Marie Searle, Keiler Nolan, Ruth Perry, Louise Spears, Margaret Caldwell, Laura Elmore, Patti Martin, Katherine Betts and Mrs. T.C. Thompson, Jr.
