The lawyers picnic and boat trip down the Tennessee River Friday ended with the tragic drowning of Lewis M. Coleman, Jr., son of District Attorney Lewis M. Coleman. While swimming near Hale’s Bar Dam with Con Milligan and Lyle West, Lewis was caught in the treacherous undertow and swept under the boat. Milligan and West were rescued with the assistance of ropes thrown to them.
Miss Louise Van Dyke went to Walden’s Ridge Friday to visit Mrs. M.B. Ochs.
Mrs. Edwin Watkins and little daughter have returned to Memphis after spending the summer with Col. and Mrs. Ed Watkins on Lookout Mountain.
Sunday, Aug. 30
“Tex” Harbour, the 1913 U-C football captain, graduates and will be replaced by Paul Dexheimer, a junior. Both are very popular athletes.
Miss Isabelle Gettys and Miss Joy Davis of Athens, Tenn., are coming to be the guests of Misses Bessie and Sadie Magill, and will participate in the tennis tournament.
Mrs. F.M. Stafford and Miss Alice Stafford have leased an apartment in the new Read Building on Georgia Avenue.
Monday, Aug. 31
Miss Jane Haymore has returned from a visit in Virginia. Miss Wenonah Haymore will return next week.
Dr. J. Park McCallie and mother, Mrs. T.H. McCallie, returned from Europe on the Olympic, landing in New York Saturday.
Tuesday, Sept. 1
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Embrey have received word that their daughter, Cecelia, has arrived in New York from Europe and will be home in a few days.
Sam Connor will serve his last day as sheriff of Hamilton County, having served the constitutional limit of three terms. He will be succeeded by sheriff-elect, Nick Bush. Sheriff Connor’s friends and associates presented him a pair of gold cuff buttons.
Wednesday, Sept. 2
DeWitt Dickson and James McIssac have gone for a two-week visit in Detroit, Mich.
Miss Ruth Dodds and Mr. Wilson W. Barnes were married Tuesday by Rev. Loaring Clark. Mrs. Barnes is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Dodds. Mr. Wilson is an electrical engineer at the Lock and Dam, where they will reside.
Thursday, Sept. 3
Mrs. Sarah Hunter, wife of Robert Hunter and a resident since 1878, died today. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter came to the United States from Londonderry, Ireland, on their wedding trip. In 1886, they built a home on Ringgold Road on Missionary Ridge and were founders of the Missionary Ridge Presbyterian Church. Their children are David, William and Elizabeth.
Mrs. E.O. Wells and daughter, Margaret, have returned from Long Island. Mrs. Wells’ mother, Mrs. Middleton, is visiting in Sanford, Ky., and will return the last of September.
Friday, Sept. 4
Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce members left on a Southern “Special” train in the interest of trade extension to upper Alabama towns of the “cotton belt.” About 300 citizens made the trip, and much fun and entertainment was the order of the day. D.A. Landress responded for Chattanooga to the welcoming speeches in Scottsboro, Huntsville, Paint Rock, and Chase.
