Chickamauga Battlefield Bicycle Tour

Saturday, July 19

Outdoor Chattanooga and the National Park Service will co-host a free, interpretive bicycle tour of Chickamauga Battlefield on Saturday, July 19, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Battlefield Visitors Center. Adults and kids ages 8 and older are welcome on the leisurely ride, which will feature several stops at places of significance to the Civil War Battle for Chickamauga. Bring your own bicycle or borrow a bicycle (riders 5’ tall and over). To reserve a bicycle, call the Battlefield at (706) 866-9241. Helmets are required by law for all riders under the age of 16.

Candidate reception & forum

Monday, July 21

The Chattanooga Women’s Leadership Institute, in partnership with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Department of Political Science, Public Administration & Nonprofit Management and Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Geography will host a candidate reception and forum on Monday, July 21, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Fine Arts Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to mingle with candidates running in the August state primary and Hamilton County general election. The event will begin in the Fine Arts Center with a reception, providing the opportunity for candidates and attendees to speak one-on-one. A moderated forum featuring candidates running in the August Primary for US House District 3 (Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, Dr. Mary Headrick and Weston Wamp) will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Auditorium. This event is open to the public. All qualified candidates running in the August 7, 2014, state primary and Hamilton County general election are invited to attend.

Emerging Artist Exhibit

Through July 25

The Association for Visual Arts (AVA) will host the 2014 FRESH Emerging Artist Exhibit through July 25. FRESH is an annual exhibition designed to help emerging artists gain professional experience and exposure for their work. This competitive, juried exhibition features artists at an early stage in their career. This opportunity is open to artists residing in the Southeast who have not had a major solo show and who do not have gallery representation. AVA is presenting 11 emerging artists, including four from Chattanooga: Aaron Cowen; Ashley Hamilton; Adam Kirby; and Lisa Srok.

Citizens’ Police Academy

Starting Thursday, August 28

Have you ever wanted to learn more about how the Chattanooga Police Department works? To learn more about what the men and women who patrol and protect our city do on a daily basis? If so, now’s your chance. The Chattanooga Police Department’s Office of Community Outreach is once again holding its Citizens’ Police Academy beginning August 28. This is an eight-week course that gives citizens a glimpse into how our Police Department does its job. Instructors from the Police Department teach each class one night a week, covering a variety of topics including narcotics, homicide investigation, patrol, and the SWAT team. To sign up, contact Officer Wayne Jefferson at 643-5090. Applications must be returned to the office of community outreach no later than August 14.
