Three projects completed in the Chattanooga area are among those being considered in the 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards competition, presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee. These include:
• Reimagining the Heart of Downtown Cleveland
Completed by WSP for the city of Cleveland
This study examined land use, streetscape improvements, a greenway extension, public and event spaces, as well as current and future parking needs. It also undertook an in-depth look at potential redevelopment options for three catalyst projects.
• SR-58 Interchange at SR-312 (Birchwood Pike)
Completed by Arcadis for Tennessee Department of Transportation
The SR-58 intersection at SR-312 (Birchwood Pike) had a crash rate above the statewide average with its combination of vertical grades, sight distance, closely spaced intersections and high vehicular speeds. TDOT selected Arcadis to implement the first J-Turn constructed in Region 2. The J-Turn configuration was chosen for its inherent safety features that separated and simplified vehicular movements, reduced conflict points and reduced accident severity.
• Copperhill Watershed Restoration
Completed by Barge Design Solutions for Glenn Springs Holdings
The transformation of the Copper Basin in Southeast Tennessee has been the result of many restoration tasks to repair the damage caused by decades of mining and acid production. The approach of adaptive management brought environmental, social and economic benefits to the community through the transformation of damaged watersheds into healthy streams and rivers that provide many recreational opportunities.
Project entries from across the state are up for consideration. The winners of the 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards will be announced during an awards gala at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville on Nov. 21.
