Hon. Herschel Franks receives award




Biographical profile publisher Marquis Who’s Who has presented the Hon. Herschel Franks with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are taken into account during the selection process.

Having accrued more than 50 years of experience in the law, Franks is retired as a judge in the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Previously, he worked as a claims attorney at United States Fidelity & Guaranty in 1958, a partner at Harris, Moon, Meacham & Franks from 1959-1970, the chancellor of the Third Chancery Court of Hamilton County from 1970-1978 and the presiding judge of the Tennessee Court of Appeals from 2004-2012.

Likewise, Franks served as a special justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court from 2002-2004 and the presiding judge of Hamilton County Trial Courts from 1977-1978.

Prior to beginning his career, Franks joined the Air National Guard from 1949-1950 and the U.S. Air Force between 1950-1954. Notably, he was inspired to pursue a career as a judge after witnessing multiple court martials during his service.

Franks earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee. His 42-year career as a judge is one of the longest in the history of the state.

Franks is a member of the American Bar Association, the Institute of Judicial Administration, the Chattanooga Bar Foundation, the Tennessee Bar Association, the Mountain City Club and Phi Alpha Delta. Franks was the president of the Chattanooga Bar Association from 1968-1969.

For excellence in his career, Franks has received numerous accolades, including the Justice Francis F Drowota III Award – the Tennessee Bar Association’s highest service award to the judiciary – in 2009.

Likewise, Franks accepted the Foundations of Freedom Award from the Chattanooga Bar Association in 1986, the Community Service Award from Optimists International in 1971 and the Merit Award from the American Bar Association.

Franks has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
