Internationally renowned soloists and ensembles will perform in Chattanooga for the first time in the coming months as part of Music at St. Paul’s 2018-19 Artist Series.
The season will consist of four concerts taking place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 305 W. Seventh St. in downtown Chattanooga. Season subscriptions and single tickets may be purchased in advance through the St. Paul’s website. Tickets for each concert will also be sold at the door.
This season’s Artist Series opens Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. with award-winning virtuoso organist Aaron Tan, first-prize winner of the American Guild of Organists’ 2018 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance. Tan will perform a varied selection of music by Bach, Bolcom, Durufle, Franck, Schumann and Vierne, among others.
Describing his program, Tan says, “The first half explores organ music originating from the Romantic and early modern era, particularly works of the French tradition.
The second half explores organ music based on American idioms like the Afro-American spiritual, Gospel hymnody and American popular music. The entire concert is bookended by movements from two of Vierne’s great organ symphonies.”
Paul Thomas, director of music at St. Paul’s, adds, “We’re excited to present Aaron in concert at St. Paul’s.
His program will showcase the great expressive range of our Casavant organ, from whispering to thundering, with distinctive timbres and colors along the way. As evidenced by his recent first prize and audience prize at the National Young Artist Competition in Organ Performance, Aaron is a world-class performer. His recital is sure to inspire and delight all in attendance.”
The 2018-19 Artists Series will continue on Friday, Dec. 7 with a candlelight concert featuring the folk-inspired early music ensemble Hesperus (Tina Chancy, Renaissance viols, Barbara Holinshed, voice; Daniel Swenberg, lute and theorbo) performing Exulta Filia, a candlelight holiday program.
In 2019, internationally renowned classical guitarist and composer David Leisner will perform a recital featuring Villa Lobos and da Falla, as well as his own music on Friday, Feb. 1.
The season concludes on Friday, March 1 with Quarteto Cuiroga, the acclaimed string quartet from Spain, performing Beethoven and Ginastera on a set of matched Stradivarius instruments.
