Opposites excel at Property Shop
Brown, Patty use diverse skills, interests to build success

When Diane Patty and Lisa Brown met while working at Loveman’s 33 years ago, they could not have been more different.

Their disparities spanned politics (Patty the conservative,  Brown the liberal), religion (Patty a Baptist, Brown a Methodist) and, perhaps most precariously, sports.

Preparation the key to Patty’s success

Carmen Patty was 23 and ready to conquer the world of real estate. Her first stop: a tumbledown property with two houses. The price: $30,000.

An out-of-town buyer had found the listing and stayed with the deal until closing day. Then she bailed.

Inn of Court Civility Award goes to Marcus

Attorney Richard Marcus says he is shocked to be chosen as a recipient of the Brock-Cooper Inn of Court 2017 Civility Award, which recognizes extraordinary civility among local lawyers.

“I’ve worked hard over the last 20 or so years to change my persona,” Marcus says. “I was an aggressive lawyer when I started practicing.

Stay out of trouble with the Board of Professional Responsibility

Laura Chastain has good advice for lawyers who want to stay out of trouble with the Board of Professional Responsibility: attend her upcoming continuing legal education seminar in Chattanooga.

Titled “How to stay out of trouble with the Board of Professional Responsibility,” the seminar will take place at the Walden Club, 633 Chestnut St., from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18. The first 45 minutes will consist of registration and a buffet lunch; Chastain will speak from noon to 1 p.m.

Orange Grove to honor attorney Tom Caldwell

Orange Grove Center will honor local attorney Tom Caldwell with a Living Legends dinner on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Chattanoogan Hotel. Caldwell served the agency and its population for 64 years.

The event will also function as a fundraiser for Orange Grove through ticket sales and a silent art auction.

View from the Hill: Haslam less clear than usual on run for US Senate

Gov. Bill Haslam usually gives an answer to every question, even if his subjects and verbs don’t agree. But when it comes to a potential run for the U.S. Senate, he stumbles.

In fact, his response was almost inaudible just a week before his pal U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said he wouldn’t seek another term at the end of 2018.

Junior League announces 2017-18 board of directors

The Junior League of Chattanooga has selected its 2017-18 board of directors to lead the organization into its 100th year.

“Our board of directors is a group of women who have one goal in mind – to make a difference in Chattanooga,” says Laura Ketcham, president of the organization. “We seek to identify and tend to the needs of our community through coalitions and programs as well as personal and professional development.”

Vols' shaky start exposes raw nerves as Dawgs roll in

Tennessee football coach Butch Jones had more than Georgia on his mind this week.

Rumors on message boards and reports on sports talk radio flamed the fires around Jones and the Vols after last Saturday’s 17-13 victory over Massachusetts at Neyland Stadium.

New Vols AD fixing Hart’s errors. Jones next?

What does John Currie’s decision to reinstitute the name “Lady Vols” for all women’s sports at the University of Tennessee have to do with Butch Jones? Bear with me:

What if Currie is intent on doing a Donald Trump? Explanation: One of the biggest criticisms (or points of approval, depending on your political leanings) of President Trump is that he seems hell-bent on undoing the accomplishments of the Obama Administration – repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, undercut environmental protections, etc.

5 reasons to see, not see ‘Kingsman’ sequel

Have you ever seen a movie you kinda liked, but when someone asked you if they should see it, you hemmed and hawed?

I have. It’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” the sequel to the action spy comedy, “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” But instead of hemming and hawing over it, I’m going to give you five reasons to see the film and five reasons to skip it. Then, if you favor one list over the other, you’ll know if the movie sounds like something you’d enjoy.

B-17 Flying Fortress takes flight over Chattanooga

Seventy-two years ago, B-17 bombers flew from bases far from home to bring freedom to oppressed people.

This weekend, the Madras Maiden, a restored WWII B-17, will take to the skies over Chattanooga as part of the Liberty Foundation’s 2017 Salute to Veterans tour.

‘Hurricane 3D’ takes viewers into the eye of the storm

Penetrating the swirling bands of wind and blinding rain is never routine for the crews who fly into the center of tropical cyclones each year. Their missions to gather weather readings from within these massive storms saves lives by improving the forecasts of the strength and movement of these deadly storms.

Realtors volunteer time, resources across our community

Membership of Greater Chattanooga Realtors are interested in more than assisting buyers and sellers. On the contrary, they gives back to their community is a variety of ways.

The largest ongoing partnership that the group has committed to is with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area. This relationship has a number of components, the first of which is in support of Habitat ReStore Trucks.

Make your kitchen a keeper

Your kitchen is probably the most important room in your house. It’s where your kids do their homework, where your friends come for coffee, where you pay your bills and – for most of us – where we cook our meals.

It’s also one of the first things at which home shoppers look, which is why experts in the home design profession pay close attention to color, pattern, lighting and appliance trends.

Here’s your retirement countdown

If you want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle, you don’t need to have been born rich or even to have earned scads of money during your working years. But you do need to make the right moves at the right time – which means you might want to start a “retirement countdown” well before you draw your final paycheck.
