3 new coaches, 1 huge task
Big rebuilds await at UT, Vanderbilt, TSU

Doug Mathews played football at Vanderbilt, coached at Tennessee and has lived the past three decades in Nashville, where he hosts weekend radio talk shows about college football and on Sundays follows the exploits of UT football.

So when writing about the state’s three new high-profile head coaches and the challenges that await them, who better to ask than Mathews?

Taking remote work a step forward
Baker Donelson hires Louisville-based attorney

As a result of the success Baker Donelson saw with remote working during the pandemic, the law firm is adding attorneys outside its geographic footprint when their experience meets client needs.

The first remote hire for Baker’s Chattanooga office is attorney Robin Barber, a Louisville, Kentucky, resident who has joined the firm’s Health Law Group.

Bankruptcy Court provides second chance

What do the following 15 people have in common: Presidents Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley, Sen. George McGovern, business innovators Henry Ford, J.C. Penney and Henry John Heinz, financial adviser Dave Ramsey, talk show host Larry King, celebrated author Mark Twain, entertainment entrepreneurs Walt Disney and P.T. Barnum, actress Debbie Reynolds and NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Johnny Unitas?

Signal Mountain calls Hamiltons

Barry Hamilton likens the town of Signal Mountain to one big neighborhood where children ride their bikes to school, parents cheer on their children at games without becoming overly zealous and families keep their eyes on each others offspring.

“One day, I’ll come home from work and there will be five kids playing in my yard, and the next day, I’ll come home and my kids will be playing in someone else’s yard,” says Hamilton, 43.

Why homeownership matters

Most consumers know homeownership is among the soundest investments an individual can make to begin building personal wealth. However, owning a home is not just in the best interest of the homeowner; homeownership also provides social stability, builds communities and is a driving force for the national economy.

Home energy savings go beyond turning off lights

With the hot, humid summer weather in the Chattanooga area, many homeowners are running their air conditioning 24/7. Now is a great time to find ways to lower your energy bill. Here are some ideas that can help.

Smart thermostat

Installing and setting a programmable thermostat can lower your heating and cooling bills by up to 10% each year.

Newsmakers: HHM CPAs promotes 18

HHM CPAs has promoted 18 individuals in its Chattanooga office.

New senior managers include Stephenie Greene and Chase Lloyd. HHM promoted Greene to senior manager in the tax department. She’s been with the firm since 2017. Lloyd is now senior manager in the audit department.

Financial Focus: Be prepared for long-term care costs

Like everyone, you’d like to enjoy a long, healthy, independent life. But the future is unknowable, so it’s a good idea to prepare for a variety of outcomes – including the possible need for long-term care.

Consider the following:

Antarctica film coming to Tennessee Aquarium’s IMAX 3D Theater

The coldest place on Earth. The windiest. The driest. The kind of home only a penguin could love.

By international agreement, nobody resides permanently on the planet’s southernmost continent. As a consequence, only a handful of scientists and support staff have experienced Antarctica’s extreme landscapes and bountiful wildlife for any length of time since its discovery in 1820.

Tennessee Titans: Reese’s contributions can't be overstated

Quantifying the on-field impact that Floyd Reese had on the Tennessee Titans franchise is easy enough. With 111 victories in 13 seasons as the team’s general manager, and its only Super Bowl appearance to date, it is easy to see the contributions of Reese, who died last week at 73.

Colleagues, players remember former Titans GM

The death of Floyd Reese Saturday bought comments and memories from his many former players and co-workers.

Reese’s impact on the organization was profound, as he helped the club forge an identity in Tennessee after it was uprooted from Houston in 1996.

Titans vs. Bears: Four downs

First down. Deal with COVID: It’s back to Zoom meetings for coach Mike Vrabel, now in quarantine from a positive COVID-19 test. That also means assistant coaches will have to run the practices and decisions involving roster cuts and playing time in the preseason finale against the Bears will have to be done by proxy unless Vrabel can have two negative tests in a 48-hour span.

How to calculate an electric vehicle’s actual charge costs

One of the challenges people have with electric vehicles is figuring out how much they cost to operate. The price of fully charging an electric vehicle’s battery can vary wildly depending on when and where you charge it. For the bigger picture, you should also include the amortized cost of buying and installing a home charging station and the rates your utility company charges.
