ABA praises law against human trafficking

American Bar Association President Laurel G. Bellows underscored the importance of last week’s passage of a uniform state law against human trafficking by the Uniform Law Commission. The law will now be taken to the ABA House of Delegates for a vote to become ABA policy at the Annual Meeting on August 12.

W-Road now open

The ongoing effort to repair two areas of the 121 year old W-Road is now complete.

On April 9, Hamilton County closed the W-Road, after part of the roadway surface began to exhibit severe cracking. Work to stabilize the roadbed and rebuild a section of existing retaining wall in the first area included the installation of 178 soil nails and micropiles. These piles are embedded below the roadway and into the existing bedrock at depths ranging from 20 to 40 feet below the surface, providing strength. The repair also incorporates approximately 4,860 square feet of steel mesh reinforcement along the escarpment and below the rebuilt retaining wall section. The roadbed has been rebuilt utilizing compacted crushed stone wrapped in geotextile reinforced fabric material.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam last week appointed Tim Gobble of Cleveland, Tenn., to the state Board of Parole, filling the remainder of the term left vacant by the resignation of Charles Taylor.

View from the Cheap Seats

I have heard that Abe Lincoln once remarked that all a lawyer has to sell is his time. Actually, that statement is true for most folks in the world.

I don’t know the actual breakdown, but I am sure the overriding majority of the world population makes their living by trading their moments for money.

Solving the grandparent pickle

Many pediatric professionals repeatedly hear the complaint, “My mother completely spoils my child. What can I do?”

Grandparents have earned the right to be tolerant, loving and supportive without having to discipline and instruct the way parents must. Nevertheless, how much is too much? Grandparents must respect their children as the parents.

I Swear
‘Unleashed’ delivers

I’ve written before of David Rosenfelt, whose tenth Andy Carpenter novel, Unleashed, has just been unleashed – uh, released. Andy Carpenter is a fictional solo-practitioner in Paterson, N.J. He’s independently wealthy, via inheritance and an early-career jackpot judgment in a civil case.

Warehouse Row to host fashion event featuring Natalie Chanin exhibition

The next chapter in the event series, Crafted by Southern Hands, will bring fashion designer Natalie Chanin and her Alabama Chanin design team to Chattanooga July 25 through 27. Starting this month, Warehouse Row will host an exhibition of Chanin’s collection of barbecue-smoked, couture wedding dresses with corresponding reception, trunk show and sewing workshop, under the guidance of Chanin herself.

Are We There Yet?

The cooler temps were great huh? The humidity gods were kind for a while. It must have been all those live Hog sacrifices we made every Saturday last fall.

Whatever the reason, it gave me a chance to catch up on some yard work I’ve been putting off for about three years that involves ivy. I think it’s Boston ivy, like the kind on the wall at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Not sure what covers the walls at Fenway, but the Cubs might want to think about changing to whatever the Sox used to exorcise their curse a few years ago.

Tart cherries: The good just keeps getting better

One of the most beautiful signs of spring is the flowering cherry tree, promising succulent fruit in about two months. The only thing better is two months later being able to enjoy the succulent fruit.

Now, according to recent research, there are more reasons to love this tree and the fruit it produces.

Prudential Realty Center says goodbye to fellow agent, friend

Chalk up a Chattanooga loss to the North Carolina State University basketball program. Wes Moore, long-time women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is now at the Raleigh, N.C., school to do more of the same. Gone with him is his wife, Linda Moore, long-time Realtor with Prudential Realty Center on Hixson Pike. Her colleagues and co-workers at Prudential wished her well in grand fashion. The goodbye party took place at the office, and was well attended and enjoyed by all, said Realtor Elaine Boyd-Osby. Talking with the Hamilton County Herald by phone from North Carolina, Moore said she already misses real estate and her friends at Prudential. “The agents there have a strong camaraderie, so I had mixed emotions while saying goodbye to everyone,” she added. Moore pictured seated in the front row, third from the right, is currently in awe of how quiet her phone is. (Photo provided)

The Realtors, brokers and other staff that make up RE/MAX Properties in Chattanooga last week celebrated their recent move to a Shallowford Road location visible from Highway 153. Food, live music and RE/MAX balloon rides rounded out the festivities.

Brainbuster – Make your brain tingle!

Vacation time is here, and many Americans are opting to stay in the good ol’ USA this year, visiting some of the many sights it has to offer. Some of my children and grandkids just got back from a short jaunt in St. Louis, where they visited the Arches and Clydesdale Horses, among other attractions.

The Critic's Corner
Pacific Rim a blockbuster with heart

I’d love to type the word “awesome” 700 times in reference to Pacific Rim and be done with my review, but my editor would probably make me rewrite 699 of those words, and I’d come across as having the credibility of a fanboy blogger. So, I’ll try to pen something with more substance. Just keep in mind that behind everything I write is that single word that sums up not just the movie but my experience watching it.

Cleveland Works is sponsored by Bank of Cleveland and is scheduled to run from Friday, August 2 through Saturday, October 12.

Tennessee Aquarium bird experts celebrate unusual hatchling

Kevin Calhoon, the Tennessee Aquarium’s assistant curator of forests, gently holds a tiny bird in his hands like a proud father. He’s cared for hatchlings ranging from bluebirds to penguins in his career, but he’s waited two decades for a baby Scarlet Tanager to hatch at the Aquarium.
